Hate it for the person you stopped to help. I don't have to worry about this issue since my trucks a gasser. Just thought I'd chime in to say you guys with the 6.7 should consider yourselves lucky ford gave y'all the large fuel door opening for both diesel and def. I just came off a 1800 mile road trip with a friend that has a '14 ram 6.7 and he needed def along the way. The fuel door opening was just a standard round door and the def cap was crammed up in the corner and required the both of us to put the def in bc the truck stop (pilot) def didn't have a built in funnel so he had to buy a separate funnel with a long hose to be able to reach in the corner where that def cap was located.

No doubt that's one of the worst mistakes a guy can make. Hopefully he has a good insurance policy that will cover the damage.

If self inflicted, I doubt Insurance would touch it. I know what Fords answer will be when they find the urea crystals in the water separator.

Any kind of distraction can cause this..Something that happens out of the norm. Those with kids can think of quite a few things your kids can do to distract you.No it doesnt seem logical and hard to wrap your head around someone doing this but Im sure everyone of us in another situation has said wtf? Why did I just do that? Ive done this a million times and know better ,wtf!!! It happens. There called accidents not on purposes.I got a phone call just today on my cell (a very important one from a school nurse I had to answer) I had fuel nozzle in hand.Just saying this is the type of thing that can distract you from otherwise routine process.

Here is a video Diesel Tech Ron did on what happens when DEF is put into the diesel fuel and what happens and how there isn't any hiding it from them. Quite interesting to say the least on why the repairs are so expensive.

So is backing into the garage door, but they cover that. Over the last few years the majority of misfueling events I remember seeing here on FTE were covered by insurance.

Go to the Chevy sites, they all complain about where the DEF filler tube is and why can't GM put it where Ford does. Dodge put it with the fuel cap, but made it a veritable PITA to do it. To the point I thought the DEF filler was under the hood as well, since the round fuel door looked the same. Also, No DP in the Dodge. Gotta make sure one hole is capped off before putting fluid in it - the chances of cross contamination are high. Even though in my Ford I usually make sure the diesel cap is on before I go to the DEF and vice versa.

When I am on my vacation trips - I wait until everyone gets out and goes inside to use the bathroom, get food, etc... In other words, until there is no potential distraction.
