My New Mystery 1973 F250 (Factory 4x4?)

I Have been wanting one of these trucks for awhile and was able to snag one for decently cheap. I have some question (and I'm sure more to come) about the truck.
[IMG][/IMG]
I ran the VIN# and it come out saying it 2wd. But the truck is 4x4 and looks pretty darn factory. Im sure the VIN is correct but are then any other clues that I can look for that this truck came from the factory as 2wd? The previous owner owner had it since 1976 and bought it with the 4x4 there, never thought it came without it.

Thanks for the help and any insights.

Is there a gas tank behind the seat ? If not more then likely 2wd cab put on 4x4 frame/chassis

the pan that goes over the 4wd shifter on the floor is only screwed to the floor so it is a simple unscrew and install the 4wd shifter pan..

There is a gas tank behind the seat. There are actually 3 gas tanks. Im not sure what is stock or what was added later. There is 1 behind the seat, 1 under the bed in the rear and another tank mounted on the passenger side. With a switch on the floor of the cab.

The cab is 4wd then .. The tag in the picture is from the door correct? If so the door is from a 2wd .. Is that the Vin on the title?

Yes the tag is from the door. If the door aren't original at least they are the same color and have the same white pin striping, seems hard to find exact doors like that, but probably makes the most sense.

No title (of Course) but I do have records of old registration tags for the truck and the Vin/plates match that.

Any other location for ID number I can look, I guess it doesn't matter I'm just more curious than anything.

Thanks guys!

Thanks for the help! I'm finding answers but now they are creating more questions haha. I found the frame vin and "drumroll" it didn't match. The new vin says its a four wheel drive. So there was some sort of swapping that happened, either just the door or full body? Ran the new vin and its clean and clear at least.

Thanks again for the help.

so no title. does the frame title have a owner? would really hate to rebuild or spend any money and get the truck taken from you.

If you have the title with the door VIN then what's the problem? Nobody looks at the frame VIN.

the frame VIN is the only legal number, both the door plate and the door jamb sticker are not legal documentation. TRUBLU77 recovered his stolen 77.5 lowboy because of the VIN on the frame even though it had a 79 front clip and cab mounted on it https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...body-swap.html

Once again... Nobody actually cares about the frame VIN. Hardly anyone even knows about it let alone looks for it.

I am sure TRUBLU77 cares and the police who recovered it looked at it. Please note the rest of the post
