Nelson, sounds like your situation mirrors mine.
So the Fuel forwarding pump. Where is that located?
I noticed that intermittently there is a leak when I run right under where the fuel filter is when I let it idle to warm up...seemed to be a winter thing.
Wonder if the 2 are connected.
Thanks,
Steve

Just happened again
About 3/4 of a tank today.
Was running on level ground.
65-70mph after about an hour on the road. Outside temp in 80s.
Will be doing the fuel pump this week or next. Will post results.

X is now doing the sputtering and loss of power all the time. I have approximately 40 miles to work and after about 30 of it I had to pull over and let it sit for a couple minutes like before. Started back up and worked fine fro 20 seconds. It seemed that when I decelerated it started happening...I had to leave it on the side of the road (2 miles from the office). It had no power and shuddered something terrible.
A buddy took me back a few hours later and we limped it along to the work parking lot.
I see lots of other posts, besides those that commented here, about the CPS. Parts store has one for 25$ so I will replace that tomorrow and my new fuel pump come tomorrow afternoon so it will have to wait for Friday.
I dropped the tank over the weekend. The tank did have some debris. The screen and siphon plug were loose in the bottom and the pickup nozzle at the bottom was accordioned up. The 2 filters were 70% plugged. everything got cleaned and put back as it should.
The tanks was down to 1/8 when the sputtering occurred today.
I drove, and I use that word loosly since it limped along sputtering the whole way, not going over 35 to the nearest gas station 3 miles away.
Tank is now 7/8 full and no change.
I noticed a small fisher in the plastic that holds the filters. Could Air be being sucked through that? If so, would air in the system cause this type of problem?
Why would it run great for 30 miles than crash all the sudden?
Whenever it did this before...I could wait 2 minutes...restart and be on my merry way. Any reason why that would change?
Obviously I am a green, green-horn when it comes to all this. Any suggestions are welcomed.
Thank you all fro your support

Changed out the CPS....had the grey one in. Put a grey one in with a larger sensor head?
replaced with unit from Advanced Auto Parts for $19.
checked the fuel bowl, made sure that the filter still looked clean.
Tried to start her up....rough, quit...rough, quit....did this 15 times....
then it happened....a nice purr
that nice purr kept going for 2 minutes...abruptly quit.
restarted...sputtered a bit...then the purr was back.
I let it idle for 10 minutes. Engine was warm...no hesitations....but it in reverse and it died.
restarted and it hesitated a bit but was running somewhat smooth...went to take it on the road and it stalled again. This time took 20 tries to get it going enough to limp it back into a parking spot 15 feet away.
The Bosch fuel pump arrived today. will put it on in the morning.
A coworker said there was a sensor up near the bowl that caused a problem on his friends 7.3 but he couldn't remember what it was called.
Does anyone know of any sensors that could be related to this issue that are in that area?
Thanks,
Steve

Fixed?
Ok, so here goes.
New Fuel Filter....No Change
Dropped tank cleaned tank screens....No Change
New CPS....No Change.
New Fuel Pump...No Change
Cleaned ICP...No Change (realize I will need a new one since it had oil in it)
So after no change on any of these things I decided to take off the valve cover on the drivers side to see if I neede to do .25 cents of the .50 cent fix.
In doing so had to undo the large electrical connection attached to the valve cover. It was corroded on several of the pins. Cleaned it and put everything back together.
Purrs like a kitten. I have put about 300 miles on it so far with no hiccups at all.
I have to assume it was the connector.
Thank you all for your input and suggestions.
I will update if something changes.
