Tweaked tone ring - OK to use?

While I was rebuilding the limited slip clutches in my carrier, it rolled off my workbench and onto the concrete floor.

It's a little bent but not bad. None of the teeth are broken. I'm thinking it will be OK, all it has to do is pass through a magnetic field and produce a signal.

That is a bit of bad luck there Andy...ouch

I would be inclined to remove the tone ring then hammer it flat. I have not had any experience with how much tolerance that VSS will work with.

Tone ring will still function as intended. The problem I would have with it would be a possible vibration in the rear end. Not saying it will, but is it really worth the chance, since it is still apart?

I'm no expert by any means, but I wouldn't chance it. Sorry for the bad luck there Andym.

Hopefully someone with more experience can say for definite, yes or no.

I second the judicious application of a hammer. I'd probably also take a file to any burrs from the drop or hammering without getting too crazy about removing metal. Make sure you clean said filings off well--don't want those floating around in your pumpkin.

Check the air gap all the way around between the each tooth and the sensor. The air gap setting is between .127-1.14mm (0.005-0.045 inch).

If the air gap is wrong replace the tone ring.

That is why you should never start by changing the VSS when you have a VSS problem. It is hard to get the numbers back and it just makes things worse.
Besides the VSS is very seldom the problem anyway.

I would think non-magnetic feeler gauges would work better.
