I second the judicious application of a hammer. I'd probably also take a file to any burrs from the drop or hammering without getting too crazy about removing metal. Make sure you clean said filings off well--don't want those floating around in your pumpkin.
That is why you should never start by changing the VSS when you have a VSS problem. It is hard to get the numbers back and it just makes things worse.
Besides the VSS is very seldom the problem anyway.
