In need of a new truck.....BUT.....
I currently have a 2001 F150 Ford Super Crew 4x4, which has been a GREAT truck however, it is nearing 14 years old & gas mileage is horrid. I do use the 4x4 four or five times a year in inclement weather situations however, 90% of my driving is flat rural ground back & forth to work with the occasional trip to Home Depot for the "honey do" list. I do tow a medium sized boat an average of 3 times a month but it's about a 20 minute round trip back & forth to the lake. My boat comes in at about 1,500lbs so I don't need a mammoth 4x4 stump pulling tractor hauler. I need a truck where I can maximize my gas mileage to fit the 90% of the time I use it. What I need is a glorified truck bed that gets great gas mileage.
I'm wondering if a new 2015 F150 XLT 4x4 with the 2.7L v6, 8 speed transmission, & 3.15 gear rear end will get me the gas mileage I seek for 90% of my driving but still allow me to have a 4x4 4 or 5 times a year & pull my boat a few times back & forth to the lake?

Cool, I thought that the new 2.7L would be just right. So much of my driving is back & forth to work on rural level ground. Since the 4x4 comes standard with the 3.31 gears can it be ordered with a 3.15 axle? OH & when will the new GM/Ford 10 speed tranny be available? I really think that 2.7L would be just right for me & I also think that the 3.15 gears with the 10 speed tranny would make fuel economy even better. I can only imagine what the MPG's would be for a set up like that.

Welcome!
First off, the base 4x4 gearing would be 3.31 axles. Currently we are still using the 6 speed trans also known as the 6R80. The jointly ventured Ford/GM 10 speed will be out supposedly in 2016.
It sounds to me as the though the 2.7L will be the perfect engine for you.

Ford hasn't published any towing specs yet but I suspect it will fall somewhere between the current 3.7L and the 5.0L.
I agree, the 5.0L would be a great choice as would the new non ecoboost 3.5L.
3.15 axles are available ONLY on 4x2 trucks. My 3.31 ecoboost has oodles and gobs of power and gets great fuel economy.
