1996 f350 5.8l to 7.3 idi swap

hey guys,

just joined here but ive been a post troller for a while now. Im in the midst of swapping a 7.3 N/A into a 96 cclb 4x4 that was a 5.8l. Ive got the motor in and everything I need to do the swap except for the spacer between the flexplate and crank, about 1" thick. That's on a e40d trans.

My question is... Im having a problem with the wiring. ive got a 92 dash from a diesel installed into the truck, with the diesel indash wiring harness. it plugs into the 96 harness that's in the firewall, but I don't know how to get the 89 7.3 motor wired in. should I tap into the 96 harness that ends by the fuse panel on the drivers inner fender, or should I try to tap in at the plug coming out of firewall? Im looking at purchasing a evtm manual but unsure if I should get a 92 for the dash wiring I put in or 96 for the harness coming out of firewall. id like for everything to work as if stock. if anyone has wiring diagrams or can help I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

I currently have a harness on the motor that's from the factory but its an 89 motor with an 89 harness. im no stranger to wiring and im not afraid to splice it in, but I need the wiring diagrams to be able to put everything where it needs to be. I don't know if I can just buy a 92 engine harness, plug it in and have it work....

if you have a 92 under dash harness put a 92 engine bay harness in it and you will be good to go.

That would be your best route to go and the Easiest. then if there is any trouble shouting to do, you can look at a 92 schematic, not have to figure out what "custom" work you did

Will a 92 harness just plug and play on an 89 motor? The 89 currently has a big round connector at the firewall and my dash has a big square connector. Leads me to believe its 2 different harnesses.

the only difference between 89 and 92 is the belts. so yes, a 92 engine bay harness will be plug and play with the 92 truck side harness and 89 engine

I bought the stamped steel flexplate but i need the 1" spacer between the crankshaft and flexplate. Im having a hard time finding one does anyone have one or know where i can get one?

use the one from the manual trans. the block adapter plates are the same between auto and manual trans.

I dissagree. 87-91 has a round firewall plug. 92-97 has a square. 2 different harnesses. Just get the "engine harness" from a 92 as well

that is what i said Brad, use a 92 engine wire harness and be done with it. i may have read different, but i said using 92 harness would be plug and play with the wiring he has in the truck and the 89 engine.

I apologize diesel brad the truck im transplanting the motor into is a 96 so it does have the square plug. The motor harness from the idi is round. Thanks guys im in the process of trying to source a 92-93 idi motor harness. Then i just have to swap harnesses i believe from what you guys are telling me and plug it in. Are all the sensor plugs going to be the same or an i still going to have to splice in?

no, you have to get some sleep every now and then!!

all the sensors should be plug and play.
i don't think there was any changes in sensors or locations on the IDI engines except for relocating the vacuum pump to the driver side of the engine when they switched to serpentine belts in 92.
