272 Y Block Needs help

Hello All,
I have just purchased a 1958 F100, I have done some work on it and it drives very well. its a 3 speed. My lifters are ticking ( I think that is the noise) and I have no idea where to start or if that is even the problem causing the tick or knocking noise. I have the proper replacement value cover gaskets and grommets. Where should I start?

Valve adjustment is in order. It's not,too difficult. Someone here could probably explain to you (better than I can) how to do it, or pick up a factory shop manual...

Adjust the valves as recommended, but remember that these are mechanical lifters and will always have some sound that hydraulic lifters don't have.

I found the shop manual pretty straight forward when adjusting the valves after we rebuilt our 292 Y-Block. Still breaking it in but feel comfortable with going back in after installed to readjust when the time comes. Based on what I read about the y-blocks regular adjustment of the valves was not uncommon.

There are a few different ways to do that - by ear while running if you know somebody who can. (That's what I thought...)

Search for Walt Nuckels (sp), for a very quick and simple method for Y blocks. .. basically 1/4 turn and done... main thing want to make sure adjustments are on the heel of the lobe. If your damper has slipped that might make this iffy. Need TDC and 90 deg. marks on same to be accurate. Then set lash on both in and ex valves, each cylinder in firing order every 90 deg. of crank, 15486372 - easy peasy!
