In your opionion, would it be better to keep looking for a earlier engine? One of my goals in this endever is to have a cool older truck, that would be simpler to work on, with none of the smog equipement that I have fought on other older vehicles to keep them functioning as intended. I have not yet read anything regarding the retarded timing nor having to redo the distributer? I guess it's back to the search function for me.

Thank you for your input, it is appreciated.

Here is a good guide for recurving the duraspark

The real power robbing emissions started in 73 but I am with you on the keeping it simple .. Front disk brakes for the F250 4x4 not until 76 and integrated power steering for the f250 4x4 not until march 1977 .. Front Disc brakes for the 2wd F250 1973 .. So whatever truck you decide on if your towing I would go @ least F250 and front discs .. without la locker for the rear diff 2wd you can get stuck on wet grass .. Any motor you get you will want to change the timing set and if you remove the egr a dizzy recurve is in order .. The heavier rated the truck the less emissions stuff will be on it as a general rule .. I think the duraspark electronic ignition makes it's debut in 1975 if I remember correctly

They crippled those engines very carefully. If you start ripping off stuff, it will run worse than it does now, and that's saying something.

It's not the timing set on a 300 that is retarded, it's ground into the cam.

The posted photo shows a smog air pump, but there is no air injection manifold rail.

The discharge hose from the air pump is connected to the air injection manifold through a check valve.

The smog head has 1/2"X 20 tapped holes for the air injection fittings.

There is a version without the air injection manifold and non catylst depending on the GWVR of the truck and location

Front Disc brakes standard equipment for the 2WD F250 1973.
Dual piston caliper front disc brakes optional for 1968/72 F250 2WD & F350.

When did front discs first come on 2WD F100s?

1973 and thru 1979, manual discs were standard equipment, power discs were optional.

Power discs standard equipment on F150 2WD's from the beginning (1975), and they were power.

1976: First year disc brakes were available in F100/150/250 4WD & Bronco.

Nothing fancy.
I mainly got it because it was the right size for my new exhaust and was decently priced. It's done really well.

Have found two different configurations using the smog/air pump on pre EFI.

1. Manifold rail with air injector fittings , 1/2" x 20 tapped holes in head
discharge of smog pump is connected to manifold through a check
valve. Hole in EGR adapter plate used for configuration #2 is plugged.

2. All six air injection holes in head are plugged with allen head screws.
discharge from smog pump is connected to side of EGR adpater plate
through a check valve.

Both configuration incorporate the curved heat tube from the exhuast manifold to EGR adapter plate

Yes that's right .. I think the one in the pic is probably #2 ..
