Super Camper Special Spare Tire Panel

Super Camper Special Spare Tire Panel
I have a line on a '78 Super Camper Special (I know, they dropped 'Super' in '78, but it's more descriptive). I tried to buy the pick-up for years from the original owner, but he never wanted to sell. He passed away last year and I lost track of the SCS, but I just found out where it ended up.
The last time I saw it, it only had about 45k miles on it and was super clean. Problem is, the spare tire panel is now missing(There's a looong story behind that). Does anybody have one, or know where one is? The guy that has the SCS thinks it's just an old junker and priced it at $800. I really want to buy it, but I'll need the panel replaced.
I seem to recall not that long ago somebody on here said they knew where a couple of SCSs were in a wrecking yard, possibly in Washington? Does anybody have an idea what shipping would be from there to central Texas?

It belonged to an old rancher I was friends with. He lived a few miles from me, but in a VERY isolated area. He bought the pick-up brand new and only drove it when he needed to pull/haul a big load. It was always maintained by the local Ford dealer or a mechanic friend of mine and when it needed ANYTHING it go fixed and fixed right. I tried to buy it from him for years, but he wouldn't sell. He always told me that when he decided to sell, I'd be the first to know. He was a life-long bachelor and ended up with Alzheimer's. He passed away last year and his niece and her husband hauled nearly everything off that wasn't tied down, including the SCS. Another guy hauled a lot of stuff off, and he took the spare tire panel for some reason. I'm pretty sure it ended up at the scrap yard.
If I go look at it, I'll post some pics.

Here's a panel from a '73-'76 SCS, but the only difference, I would think, would be the trim.

Applications: 1973/76 F350 Super Camper Special - 1973/79 F350 Trailer Special - 1977/79 F350 Camper Special - FoMoCo dropped "Super" after 1976.
If a 1977/79 Camper or Trailer Special is a Ranger XLT or Lariat, it will have Race Track mouldings.
Panel pictured in post 6 does not have a Race Track moulding on it, because it's from a 1973/76 Ranger XLT, or a 1977/79 Ranger.

RougeRiver, thanks for the link. I'm going to call the folks that have the pick-up tonight.
NumberDummy, thanks for the info. I was hoping you would know whether there were any NOS left. Guess not...there probably weren't many 'extras' around when the SCS was in production. It's not like they were that common even then.
Oh, to my great surprise, when I mentioned to my wife today that I had found this 'lost' SCS (I'd told her before how I'd tried to buy it for years) she said 'Go get it.' I nearly fell over. She's the best!

Well, it's mine. I went to check it out today. Apparently the current owners didn't take care of it as well as the original did. It runs, but the engine doesn't sound like it's building oil pressure. Lifters are rattling. I'll have to check it out when I get it home. I'm probably going to trailer it home Thursday.
It has been sitting outside for quite some time, so the paint is pretty well toast, but the body only has a couple of small dents in it. They won't be hard to fix. I bought the spare tire panel off Fleabay. Thanks for the line on that, Rogueriver. I couldn't remember what engine and transmission it had, but it's a 400/4 speed.
I took my camera with me, and remembered it about half-way home. I'll post pics after I get it home.

Man, If only you had posted this a month earlier - there was a truck like that at my local pick-n-pull, I was eyeballing it for the back bumper for mine but didn't have the cash that week. Went back a week later and the whole truck was gone, there was a lot of it left so I don't know if they crushed it or someone bought the whole thing for parts.
I will try and keep my eyes open and let you know if I see another. Don't know where in Texas you are but check www.row52.com, if there are any yards in your area put in Year = 1973-79, Make= Ford, Model = truck (pre-81) select a yard or put in your zip code and distance. They list the VIN numbers so I would think F35, F36, F37 or F38 as the first three should get you in the ball park. If you find one out of your local area try the chapter in that area and see if anyone would be willing to pull it and ship it to you.
Oh, and don't let go of that woman, she's a rare one. Sounds like she really understands the important things. hahaha.

PDX, thanks, but I DID buy the panel that was being sold on E-bay so at least that won't be an issue. I'm heading over in the morning with a flatbed to get the pick-up.
I've got two small surgeries scheduled over the next week, so I'm probably not going to get to work on it much, but I WILL try to get some pics posted. Like I said before, the paint is in bad shape now, but the body is still in pretty darned good shape. It's a shame it hasn't been taken care of. The original owner took pride in it and always kept it under a barn when it wasn't being used.
