Numbers stamed in cowl

Stamped on my 1950 F1 cowl next to the VIN plate is 528K5672. What does it stand for? The VIN plate reads 98RC 268072 ATL, same numbers on the frame and glove box door.

Are you sure that is correct? The stampings were generally

letter(paint) one or two letters(plant) one or two numbers (day) letter(month) numbers(production # on line)

For Example, my 50 F5 was stamped MNR9J729

M = Meadow Green

NR = Norfolk, Va.

9 - 9th day

J = September

729 = build number

I went out and checked the number again and found that 528K5672 is correct.

Are the stamped numbers in the center of the cowl, or right next to the tag? I suspect you are looking at a different number. Should look something like below

The cowl numbers are more on the driver's side of center, and are about 1/2" tall

Yeah, Ross put up my cowl stamp. I guess they changed the system in 51 because mine reads:

RH F4 H 2IH 2272
RH - Richmond plant
F4 - F4
H - Silvertone Gray
2IH - 21 August
2,272th vehicle off the line in August, 1951 or August, 1950?

Maybe each plant used their own system?

That stamp next to the VIN plate doesn't make any sense to me. But here is the decoder for your VIN.
  • The first character of the 48-50 vins is year 8 - 48; 9 - 49;50
  • The second and third characters indicate engine 8R for V8; 7H for sixes
  • The 4th character is model, for example: F1 model code is C; F2/3 code is D and later (around 110,000) split into D/Y respectively; F4 - F6 listed as T
  • Then, up to 6 digits complete the vin

The pictures show the location of the cowl stamp on my St. Paul built '50 F2.
