how many of y'all grease your *****
when you hook to a trailer, i usually grease them a little before every trip unless there is a bunch still gooped on there from the last time, or if its the first time i tow when winter is over so the old stuff gets scraped off. had a guy at work tell me its not necessary to grease the ball and he never does because by the time the ball gets wore down enough to slip off the trailer is long gone anyway
what are your thoughts on this, sounds a little dumb to me

My dad used to grease the coupler and keep the rubber ball cover on when not in use. I did the same for a little while, then gave up: it just makes a mess. I have a painted 2" ball and most of the paint is still on after a winter of use, so there's not that much friction. Maybe if I towed a trailer on a daily basis, but for the once a week tow (and a light trailer at that) I don't bother.

Never have, never will. I haven't had a problem with any load I have pulled, so I don't see a reason to start.
As for Illinois law, that is exactly why I keep the hitch in at all times. My truck has been rear ended twice with the hitch on it. Both times it saved the truck from major damage. As for the whole air bag thing, that isn't my problem, they hit me.

Same here, makes a big mess. I have learned to watch for hitches years ago. But it is fun to watch others hit that nasty greasy hitch in the parking lots.

It used be you would grease the ball to keep it from rusting so the found was good. But now most trucks and trailers have grounds thru the connectors. As far as leaving the drop hitch in I'm a firm believer in two things they save your trucks *** literally and you MUST remember that you left it in. A nice shin check at 4 or 5 in the morning getting in to go to work will ruin your day real quick.
