rear main seal

Went to the dealer today and asked about a ear main seal that I am going have installed. Came back with yes its available for around $100 because its new and improved over the old one? Anyhow anyone installed one yet? Is ther anyplace with the seal for less? The shop told me that I need an OEM or one from napa as they last the best!

Any input appreciated. Seal number by ford is cra 7082D

Personally, I stay away from NAPA branded parts. They're made by the lowest bidder in China and are crap. Especially on a part like the rear main seal where replacing it requires removing the tranny, I wouldn't want to have to do it all over again because the part I used failed due to some defect. I learned my lesson by buying (& replacing) their U-joints. They didn't last 3,000 miles.

You really need the installation tool to install it correctly. See if the parts store loans / rents the tool.

Replace or repair...

I used an oil additive on my wife's 03 Accord for a rear main leak and I am thrilled!!! $6.00 additive saved a $1000.00 dealer repair bill. Try an additive first, if it does not work, no harm dome.
I purchase some at Wal-Mart, it was in a black bottle for around $6.00.
let me know what happens.

Well airborn406 when it starts to leak again. Get ready to replace every seal in the engine. All the stuff does is cause ALL the seals to swell up. And what happens to additive when you change oil.

Well Wtroger!
Then it stands to reason all the seals are worn!
A high mileage motor what's it matter? My 2000 Honda had a distributor seal leak, it fixed that!
The 03 Accord has had a oil change since the additive was drained and it is still sealed up!
207k miles 2000 160k on the 03 they won't run forever, when a cheap fix works, I'll take it! If choose not too thats your right, I'me simply offering him an alternative to allot of work and expense.
I did allot of reading about the additives before I used it, more pros than cons.

Buzz off!

Guys lets not get into a peeing contest. Everyone knows what an opinion is like and everyone has one! I tried the seal swell and it did not really help. Thus I am going to have the seal done and R&R the clutch while the trans is out.

Seal swell works in some cases and in some it doesnt, just like any sealer be it radiator or....

The truck has 317K on it and its about time that things begin to leak due to FW&T. Once the main is taken care of it should be good to go for a long time.

Hows your Truck Hank

Got mine back together

I replaced the Rear Main among other things with a Felpro so far so Good but time will tell

when I compared the New vs Old Seals the old was worn about 1/8-3/16 of an inch around

If it goes out I don't care I will change it back to OEM

Maybe I should have done more research on that seal but I don't mind Spinning a Wrench so

I agree probably not much harm in a high miage engine when everything is worn

I know mine could use a complete reseal but that's aCompleate Rebuild so I could run additive just to stretch it out more no harm in that

Blade we ae getting ready for summer trip so nothing with the ranger right now. Tentatively scheduled to take to the shop in mid july. Since all parts have lifetime warranty only really paying for labor and the few new parts to be put in. Like I said a new flywheel, the main seal being the 2 new purchase parts, maybe a new master cyl. dont know right now. Shop said $350 labor and they will R&R all since its all apart. Just need to exchange the old for new, so its about 2 months out till it gets done. Like you I also use seal swell, but it is not really working. Not that many seals anyhow, had the front timing seal done last year along with new valve gaskets. so the main is about it for R&R.

will let ya know how it works out. Glad yours is a successful repair.
