Vacuum Wipers

Hello to all and every day is a good day to go truckin'!
...and some days it rains... So, I've been thinking of different ways to have my wipers work without having to convert to electric. The electric kits won't fit because of my stock radio.

Does anyone know how much vacuum is needed to operate the wipers? Is it possible to use a 6v vacuum pump and switch independent of the vehicle vacuum line? Seems the independent pump is the way to go, but need to find one strong enough. Hence the need to know the strength or draw needed.

As always, thanks for your collective input.
Tony

Ford offered a "dual" fuel pump / vacuum pump as an option when these were new. Find one and install it on your truck.

I plan to run a reservoir to supply enough vacuum for the wipers on Blue. I am running a much larger engine than was originally in the truck so on demand vacuum should be much more.

Not sure where you got that; looks to be an 8CM-9350-C.

Dennis Carpenter and Obsolete Ford show to have some. I have to wonder if any are available with diaphragms to suit modern gas?

I think the fuel pump side of the dual pump uses the same diaphragm as the regular pump. You should be able to purchase an alcohol resistant diaphragm and install it in the dual pump.

I dont know about 6v but for 12v I want to try one of these inline with the engine vacuum. I have one on the shelf I tried as a standalone in my 37 buick and it was not strong enough to work on its own but may work in tandem with the engine.

Rain-x works on my daily driver and my 1950 f1. Thus wipers are for show!

All the new ones are plastic. Look for a car at the boneyard with vacuum-operated headlight doors (Lincolns?). They'll have big canisters.

The vac wipers use a ton of volume, I think the best you can expect from adding a canister is to get over a medium sized hill before it peters out.

I found the pinapple juice can the large one is the direct replacement for
my 93 F150. However you must use a one way valve on the can. All these
gas pickups have these cans not for wiper but for heat and a/c. Also a
belt driven vac pump from a diesel works fine.

My plan is to build my reservoir from a length of 3" pcv mounted back under the frame. It will be several feet long. I am looking for an air tank from a truck with air brakes, better yet.
