does vin plate have GVWR on it?
Sorry to ask such a dumb question but my truck is not local for me to inspect. I'm in the process of transferring the title of a '97 F-250HD to Pennsylvania, but the fact sheet provided by PennDOT says:
I'm having my dad (current owner of the truck) get a rubbing of the VIN, but I've never seen a dashboard VIN plate with GVWR listed on it before. If that doesn't have it listed, what other plate is on the truck that has the VIN, GVWR and is embossed so a rubbing can be made? Thanks for the help.
When completing Section A of Form MV-1, the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) must be verified to ensure that the number listed on the out-of-state title matches the number on the vehicle’s VIN plate. A VIN plate tracing must be attached to the reverse side of the white copy of all MV-1 applications for PA certificates of title for the following vehicles:
1.All trucks or truck tractors - VIN plate tracings of trucks should contain the:
3.All vehicles previously titled in another state.
1.All trucks or truck tractors - VIN plate tracings of trucks should contain the:
- a.Complete Vehicle Identification Number
- b.Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR)
- c.Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR)
3.All vehicles previously titled in another state.

Where in pa are you.
Also, when filling out title firm they will ask curb weight and gvw. Make sure you are close on curb weight and over estimate gvw. My buddy's e99 f350 is titled for only 7k and my 90 f150 is titled at 9k. I'm not sure if getting it titled higher costs more money, but I think registration cost goes by gvw maybe. (Or am I thinking Maine)
Maybe brad can elaborate. It was 3 years ago when I retitled from Maine. I can't remember.

registered weight effect the cost
Class 1 5,000lbs or less =$58.50 per year(my ranger is here)
class 2 5,001-7,000lbs = $81.00
Class 3 7,001- 9,000lbs = $153.00
Class 4A 9,001-10,000lbs = $198.00 (One of my F350s is registered here)
Class 4B 10,001-11,000lbs =$198.00 (yes same cost)
class 5 11,001-14,000lbs = $243.00
class 6 14,001-17,000lbs = $288.00
class 7 17,001-21,000lbs = $355.50
Class 8 21,001-26,000lbs =$405.00(My F250 crew cab is registered here)
And if you want, you can register the truck for class1 but you would be over weight empty, but you can still do it
Typically to change the GVW you need a MV-41 form filled out by a inspection station

My main concern here is I want to make sure I have all required documentation when I hit the notary to get the title transferred and a plate issued. The truck is still in NC, I want the plate to drive it home legally. But with my luck, if I don't get a rubbing with the GVWR on it, the notary won't complete the transfer

Since NC requires a notarized seller's signature, it will already be notarized when I take it to a PA notary. I will also have a dash VIN plate rubbing. My dad made the rubbing with the windshield out during replacement, made it a lot easier!

When I titled my VARIOUS trucks from out of state IF the truck was not present at the notary all they needed was a vin tracing. THANKFUL for you, you had the windshield out, otherwise you would have been screwed.
A local notary to me suggested if I could not get a rubbing would be to MAKE a vin number from a piece of aluminum and number punches.
I had even a better idea An Embossed label maker. PERFECT numbers and they letters are RAISED just like the factory vin tag
If you want to just please your notary(even though they don't need it)
Just make a fictitious label with what they "want", trace it and give it to them

Just wanted to give an update, I finally went to get the title transferred. The first notary I went to, REFUSED to transfer the title without a Verification of GVWR form filled out and signed by a certified PA inspection mechanic. I went to another notary and she just looked up the GVWR on her computer, and processed the transfer without any fuss (she did make a photocopy of the photo my dad took of the door jamb sticker; she said it wasn't really necessary but Harrisburg likes documentation when it's available).
So next week, I'll be heading down to get the truck and drive it back home.
