1965 Ford F-100 Power Steering Gear Box

I have a 1965 F-100 with a broken power steering gear box. The number on the cap is: C6 AR 3580 A and the number on the input shaft is: E4AC 3A287 AA. Can someone tell me what this steering box is from or if the numbers have changed? I need a power steering box of the same size to fit my existing steering column. Thanks for any help with this problem.

1965's were not available with P/S, so it has been swapped in. The steering column, most likely, has also been swapped, because with P/S, the steering shaft is shorter.

You have Ford/Saginaw P/S, E4AC-3A287-AA = 1984/91 Crown Victoria/Mercury Grand Marquis/Lincoln/Town Car.

But this doesn't mean the entire gearbox is from one of these cars, it's possible that only the input shaft was replaced.

Most people that swap Ford/Saginaw P/S into these trucks get it from: 1969 F100/250 2WD & F350 from serial number G30,001, 1970/79 F100/250 2WD & F350.

1965 Ford F-100 Power Steering Gear Box

Thank you for the information. It was extremely helpful. I found out the steering column has been changed for a '79 van column with tilt. Thanks again.

Why would some one put a power steering box on a manual steering truck? I mean. It makes it harder to steer. Right? Some one put one on my 1965 with the tilt/telescoping column. I would like to put it back original. What years of manual steering box/column will fit my 1965?

woodsmoke, You certainly are welcome to your opinion, but there are many of us that have converted our manual steering to power, as well as drum brakes to power discs. I wouldn't have a truck any other way.

I agree. But. Don't you need to do more than just bolt a power steering gear box on in place of the the manual steering gear box? Just bolting on a power steering box does not automatically give you power steering. That is what this goober did on the 1965 I bought.

Woodsmoke, please don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to be a smart !!!, but do you have the power steering pump hooked up? If you do, there must be something seriously wrong with the system. With power steering in that truck, you should be able to blow on the steering wheel and make it turn. Are the pump lines to the box on correctly?

What is so hard to understand here? This not a power steering truck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Theres no where to hook power steering lines from the steering box to!!!!!!!!!!!!! There is no power steering pump!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The yahoo just bolted a power steering box on in place of the original manual box with a tilt/telescoping column!!!!!!!!!!!! Like that was going to magically turn it into power steering. I just want to put a original manual box and column back in it. I can handle that.

HOLD UP BRO, It is you that is not writing so we understand what your problem is. I just went back to read post #1 where you start out "I have a 1965 F-100 with a broken power steering gear box." not with "I bought a truck that someone started a PS conversion on that is not complete."

We very likely can help you but we are not mind readers. I have been around these trucks since they were new, as well as I posted that my 66 has been converted to PS, PDB, C6 auto tranny as well as a few other things.

For your enjoyment: Hey Number Dummy, Masked Rider, and other FTE Members, We have a yahoo from Waco Texas that was dumb enough to buy a truck with no power steering pump connected to the gear and thinks he can come in here with no photos or good explanation, blink his eyes and we fix it for him.

Maybe you can take some photos, load them to a hosting site like Photobucket, then link them here. I have no idea how the "car" gear is connected, but if you work with us we just might be able to help you.

John, themusicman is the OP.

woodsmoke his thread.

People that hijack threads cause confusion, because not all of us notice the different FTE user name.

D7TZ-3504-F (replaced C5TZ-3504-D) .. Manual Steering Gearbox.

Applications: 1965/77 F100/250 2WD / 1967/77 F350.

1965/66 F100/250 2WD manual steering column: Three different types: With A/T, with 3 M/T, with 4 M/T.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The (optional) tilt column and the Ford/Saginaw P/S gear could be from a 1978/79 F100/350, Bronco, Econoline. Tilt column not available with 3 M/T.

I apologize for high jacking the thread and being a jerk. Sometimes my bi-polar disorder gets the better of me. Thanks to every one for all the help. Smoke.

I just bought my very first classic vehicle, a 1966 Custom Cab F100, SWB. It's an amazing feeling to drive such a classic truck. It's already turned some heads! It has a 429 engine, C6 transmission, and Vintage Air AC unit in it. One of the things I would eventually like to do is convert it to power steering. And I would like to shorten the steering column a few inches so the steering wheel is not in my chest. So what kind of parts should I be looking for? And how involved is the process?

Thanks in advance for any advice you may give,
Adam
