opinion - using a lift to load a motorcycle

The last time i loadded a motorcycle on to my f-250 I used a 6ft 1200lb rated ramp and a whinch. overall it worked...but the bottom of the bike and the top of the ramp did a big time rub and groove scrap dance.

so I'm wondering if I use this lift to raise it....then just roll it on to the truck bed. bike is 800lbs, lift is rated at a 1000lbs.

other options is to use a 4X8 trailer....those are easy to load since they sit lower to the ground.

I would opt for the trailer, unless you plan on taking the lift with you everywhere. The trailer would be easier to get the bike on and off of too. Rolling the bike onto the lift while it is on the ground is one thing, but from a truck bed any number of things could go wrong and your bike take a nice fall.

If you decide to go with another ramp, this ramp calculator will help you get the proper length to avoid the issues with the ramps you have.

ramp calculator

You might want to check and see if anyone used a lift and posted it on Youtube.

I like the calculator...thanks...it shows what the problem is...according to the calculater..need a 7.5 ft ramp. longest ramp avail and of which I have is 6ft.

alternatively...there are bridge curve type ramps that would work if the right weight rating can be found. most of the bridge curve type ramps are rated at 1200 lb for a pair of ramps...but only 600lb per ramp side...bikes weights 800lbs

It's pricey, but you can safely ride it up:

Big Boy Motorcycle Ramp

I use a pair of 8' ramps to walk my motorcycles up, but my heaviest DS bike is only 350lbs. A bit more unnerving with 800lbs of bike...

That ramp calculator is handy, I've been thinking of selling my bike trailer now that I have an 8ft bed. I was thinking of using a winch & one of these Black Widow Motorcycle Ramps according to the calculator I need a 14.6ft ramp, but I think an arched 12ft should do the job.

I have one of those 79 dollar 2000lb walmart winches that can clip to the trailer hitch ball. I run a chain thru it and terminate the chain on the forward lower bed eye hooks. it pulls the bike right up. the only catch is with a 6ft ramp, it gets stuck as soon as it hit midway top.

That is the ramp I use (Black Widow, 12ft). It was actually longer than I needed as my platform is about 26 inches (IIRC). But I wanted the longest I could get and still put in the back of my truck. I got mine here from the link given. Price hasn't changed. They do come in 3 sections that each fold in half and be lifted by one person.

It's a little hard to see, but the edge of the ramp is sitting on ground that sloped away at least a foot. So the angle is higher than normal.

I still didn't like doing it, short legs, so I purchased a Rampage Lift. I have yet to install it.

I don't want to dissuade you from your idea, though I do want it video taped to see how you do it.

The trailer is a SwivelWheel 58dw. SwivelWheel The DW is rated to 1200 lbs.

The hitch was a custom made hitch that runs about 10 feet up my frame of the trailer. It was welded up by Bannasch Welding. They have done custom hitches on 3 of my vehicles. Never a problem. Home

both of the later videos would be prefered ways of doing it.

I need to find one of the bike lifts and give it a good shake test to see how stable it really is.
