Hi, I just bought a 96 F150 extended cab while on vacation in OH. We will be picking it up on Fri. I am looking to get a cap, but don't want to buy new if I don't have to. I have seen a few on ebay and a few advertised in our local paper, but I'm not sure of the length of the bed. Is there a way to tell from the VIN? I say it is a long bed since it has duel fuel tanks, my hubby says he thinks it is a short bed. If I recall from the two I had previously one was 6 1/2 feet and the other was 8ft. We called a friend that lives near the dealer where we bought it and he went and measured it and says it is 7ft. Now I am totally confused. I need a cap asap since I use the truck for work so I'm trying to save time and find one before I actually get the truck. any ideas?

Thanks

The short beds had standard dual tanks, just like the long ones. The bed length isn't encoded in the VIN, but it is on the sticker in the door jamb: The first code on the bottom line is "WB" (wheelbase), and an X-cab will either be 139" (short bed) or 155" (long). 133" is standard cab longbed & 152" is crew cab short, so be sure you get the exact number.
