5.4L removal

I have everything detached from the engine to be able to pull my 5.4L out of my F250 but there are four nuts attached inside the transmission housing. I have gotten one of them but I need to turn the cracnk to get to the others. How do I do this? P.S. The motor most likely broke one of the timing chains or at least one has slipped. Any advice?

Thanks!
Bob

You evidently are talking about the torque converter bolts to the engine flywheel. You will have to pull the torque converter out with the engine and then you can remove the bolts.

How did you break a timing chain? High miles? How many does it have?

Sorry for all the questions. I'm just trying to learn a little from your experience.

That is just one scenario - the timing chain breaking. It could have just skipped a tooth on one of the gears or something else happened. I haven't taken the front cover off to identify the real issue. The motor had 128,000 miles on it. It just quit when it was going about 40 mph.

I know someone who has 143K on his, and he hasn't done a thing outside of oil changes. He tows a heavy trailer a lot, too.

You say the engine just quit. Were you able to crank it over after you quit?

why not just put a wrench on the crank bolt at the front and rotate the engine to access the bolts?

I have a 98' 5.4L. There is an access hole that has a rubber grommet in it on the drivers side at the rear of the engine and it faces the forward. Take a socket and turn the crank pulley bolt to line up the bolts in the access hole. I was able to do 2 at a time, one in the access hole and one at the bottom after removing cover plate from transmission. Be sure to mark the torque converter to driveplate designation so as to reinstall to same location.
