rebuilding the 1964 3 speed steering column

Having problems putting the shifting arms back into the opening with the new thrust washers and the new spacer. the old ones are history. the opening is right at .500 and when I stack the new components together its about .564. Has anyone else had this problem? everything has been cleaned. Should I remove material from the shim or the shifting arms??

Where did you find the parts you're replacing?

What are the basic part numbers for these parts that you're referring to?

Thanks Number Dummy. I purchase the parts from DC. 2- 70363 thrust washers and 1- 7336 spacer. I removed a few thousands from the spacer on both sides and got it to go together. I now have another problem with the new shift tube that I bought from Tyson Motors about a year ago. The new tube was about 1/4 " longer them the old one. I posted at the time and was told it would be all right. Wrong I can not get the shifting color down far enough to get the little square bolts to come thru the turn signal housing. The tab on the shifting tube is bottoming out not allowing the color to go down allowing the bolts to extend into the housing. I have been working off and on for over a year trying to get this column rebuilt. It seems like one step forward and two steps back. I have lost faith with Tyson motors as they would not take it back. My only choice is to modify the tube or look for another one. Thanks for being a good to guy. Dave

I read thru your back posts, did not see where you asked for a shift tube in any of them.

Where did you get the part number for the shift tube you bought? How did you determine that Tison had it and does the part number match the one on Tison's invoice?

While some obsolete parts vendors (like Green Sales) will take parts back, usually Ford dealers will not.

Thanks Bill, your right I also checked back and my old post are not there. You gave me the information on shift tubes over a year ago. After receiving it from Tison, its overall length was 1/4" longer then the old one. That 1/4" is now causing trouble at the top end of the column not letting the shift color to good down far enough to let the sq. headed bolts to come through the t/signal housing. I'm looking for another shift tube or modify the one I have. Thanks again for your help
