Driveshaft shudder with gooseneck - let dealer shim or airbag? which airbag?

So I picked up a 53' for the racecar.

When I'm hauling it on take off I'm getting a pretty good shutter out of the truck.

My crew chief who owns a maintenance shop, said it's a known issue, and ford has been shimming the drive shafts.

I talked to the service writer at my dealership and he said it's a known issue and they are working on it.

however, he said if they shim the driveshaft, there is a good chance it could fix the problem loaded, but then unloaded I'd have the problem.

Someone suggested an airbag setup for the rear, but I'm not familiar with them really. Has anyone done this for the shudder?

Is there a setup that's recommended?

I'm towing about 15k, but that's far from the limit of my 450.

I put air bags on both my 6.4 and 6.7 to stop the Driveline shudder. Wasn't bad, just annoying as I pull over 15k as well. I put Firestone Ride Rites on them with a Viair 10007 onboard air system so I can adjust on the fly. Love the setup. And yes the bags cure the shudder.

I have just a little shudder as well but not bad enough to do anything about yet. If I add more weight then I will have to.

Air bags are the way to go. That way you can adjust for many different loads and keep it level every time. Plus when unloaded you can air down.

On board air compressor as well with a tank with aux fitting so you can air tires and things too.

Firestone ride rites is what I had.

There is one other item that may help in this case as well. Stableloads. From torklift, one of the vendors on this site.

I had a set of those on my 6.4. They keep the overloads engage so you don't have all the bounce. That may help and is a pretty low cost way to go.

My dad gets a small amount of driveline shudder when towing heavy but not real bad so he hasn't done anything about it.

Bags would be my choice for the adjustability.

I had shudder on an 11 350 DRW. Put air bags on and it helped but did not cure but was livable. Some have had ford change drive shaft with good results. I now have 450 will still get a little shudder with hard acceleration from a stop especially if on a hill but is acceptable to me. I have 3400 pin weight GVW 13350 with camper. Same camper both trucks.

I found that if I was on or near the overload leaf, I would experience shudder. so added Ride-Rite air bags. So far, so good. I was going to install add a leafs and actually have a 1200 pound 'kit' but am waiting until I have a few more pulls with the bags then decide if they are needed as well (or instead )

He was pitted behind me at the GA race in April, they cooked up some Low country boil.

Yes they are. We have been friends for years. Our sons are friends and go to school together. His shop is only about 4 miles from my residence and they live about 8 miles from me. Very good people!
