My Experience With an H-Pipe
After running a true dual exhaust system (a separate exhaust pipe running from each header) since about 2009, a friend in the exhaust business convinced me to install a crossover pipe, or "H-pipe" between the two exhaust pipes. It was explained to me that the H-pipe would help with low end torque (and an X-pipe would help with top end horsepower). So I went ahead and did it, not expecting much difference.
Let me just say that the H-pipe made a VERY noticeable difference in my truck! Driving away, I felt the difference immediately. Although throttle response was always excellent with this truck, the H-pipe greatly improved low end power; I can actually feel the difference in the throttle. The engine seems to "breathe" better, as in I can accelerate MUCH easier and faster with less throttle pressure than before. The improvement feels like I fixed a sticking brake, or like I shed 500 pounds off the truck!
An added bonus came after I got home and got out to inspect the H-pipe location with the truck at idle: the exhaust note is now much deeper, much STRONGER. It now sounds like...a 5.0 Mustang!

Ford's do well with an h or crossover pipe, something about the firing order IIRC. The scavenging needs to be done closer to the front, more around the bellhousing. An old trick was to paint an area a couple feet long closer to the engine on each pipe, where the paint burned off was the hot spot and the pipe would go between there.

Interesting. Thanks for posting this. Both of my exhaust pipes run down the passenger side, very close to each other. I wonder if there would be any advantage to using the "H" with the pipes in this configurations?

I'll be running Flowtech longtube headers to a side by side dual to a dual in/dual out MagnaFlow 22" muffler with a built in cross over. I'm going to exit the same spot as the FE truck, passenger side behind the cab. No cats. I don't think an H pipe will help me as much, simply because there is not a lot of room for it. I'm going to have to have my DS tube cross under the tailshaft of the transmission to dump where I want it. When I get the motor going I am going to take it in for a quote and ideas on where to run everything.

I've got a Y pipe in my 2 in 1 out muffler. MASSIVE increase in power and torque over true dual glasspack home made system.

I'm running stock manifolds and y-pipe to a Magnaflow muffler with a turnout in front of the rear wheel. It was a hack hob for the mounting and turnout.
Was thinking of scraping the whole system for headers and duals. Now considering some headers and new y-pipe. Or maybe X-pipe into current muffler. It's a pretty big can and might work.
