Ford 390 Cam help
My rig is a 75 ford f100 had the 360 which is being took out and rebuilt and converted to the 390. I'm swapping the old intake for the edelbrock performer and the carb for a holley 750. Money allowing headers soon .. Got 3:50 gears and 33x12.50x15 m/t . I use my truck for everything from huntin to hittin mud holes to just crusin to haulin scrap or whatever I need it for. I would like a good soundin cam but really I want one that's gonna work best with my setup.. Also it's a 4speed with the granny gear . Any help would be appreciated

Holy mackerel - a cam question and you didn't already get 50 responses?? A Comp H.E. 268 or 270 Magnum should work well. They're both older designs, pretty easy on the valvetrain while still working pretty darn well. I'm running the 268 in a 390 with automatic and 3.00/1 gears, and it works pretty well. It has a slight lope at idle; the 270 will give you a nastier idle, with a resultant loss of some low-end, but the manual tranny will help you out there.

I agree on the 270 with a manual transmission should work just fine. You might want to rethink about headers though. Most FE headers I have seen are to close to the starter causing problems with all the heat plus the header has to be removed to change the starter. Sanderson is the only one I've heard about that doesn't cause problems with the starter but, they are expensive.

There are a lot of guys over at the FE power forums that could help you out. Header clearance is an issue, I would recommend a power master mini. Header wise I like the Doug's stuff personally. Camshaft wise, unless you change the intake and do some head work you really should stay rather mild. The truck engines ran much lower compression than the car versions and the heads were rather restrictive.
