New to me 1972 Ford F100 4x2 SB Black

I'm very excited about my new toy added to my stable. I've been looking for one just like this for a very long time. Not hard, just keeping my eyes open. I finally got it. It's a 1972 Ford F100 Ranger 4x2 Shortbed, 390 auto, PS, PB, Black. Black was not offered in 1972 on the trucks, but this one was custom ordered from Ford original in Black. It is in amazing just about original condition other than wheels and tires. No rust. Was originally built in Kansas City and delivered to Denver where it has had two previous owners. It has 108K miles but has obviously always been garaged. The windshield is even original. That is amazing for Colorado. It drives like a dream. Only code that is odd is the interior code. It is an N4. I can find N3 for Red on Red interior, but not N4. Any help there? I even gave up a 1965 Mustang to make the room. But hey, you can find a nice 1965 coupe any day of the week. A truck like this one is hard to come by. I'm looking forward to many years of cruizing enjoyment in this baby!!! My original truck I bought when I was 14 was a 1970 F150 long bed 390 4 speed. That has been gone for many years. So this one is special to me. Here it is:

Man that's a nice truck! Reminds me of my neighbors from way back when I was a kid. He had a truck like yours and his wife had an orange baja bug.
His wife was hot. Has nothing to do with your truck but it's a memory...

One reason I bought it, lots of memories for me, family, and friends. It certainly is a really nice one.

Let's see more pics of this gem. My favorite color on vehicles is black. So it really catches my eye. Great find on a nearly original truck. Hard to come by in that condition hope I find one of my own someday.

More pics!

I'm actually partial to the Ranger rear panel rather than the XLT wood grain.

Notice the black dash painted as it came down the line and then mixed with the red steering column.

Factory tubes from exhaust manifold to carb are still present along with charcoal canister and tubes.

Nice find...I easily give away a Mustang for a truck...but that's just personal preference.

I finally got it. It's a 1972 Ford F100 Ranger 4x2 Shortbed, 390 auto, PS, PB, Black.

Black was not offered in 1972 on the trucks, but this one was custom ordered from Ford original in Black.

Only code that is odd is the interior code. It is: N 4
Nothing odd about it.
Black has been available for Ford trucks since day one, so whoever told you this nonsense didn't have a clue.

Look on the Warranty Plate for the COLOR code. If it was originally painted black, it will be an A

If the truck was painted a non standard color, it would have been a Domestic Special Order, the COLOR code will be blank and the DSO code stamped on the Warranty Plate will have 6 numbers.

In order to discover the Domestic Special Order non standard color, you'll have to contact martiauto.com .. to get a copy of your trucks original build sheet.

N 4: N = Dark Red Vinyl & Dark Red Body Cloth / 4 = Ranger Cab with Styleside Pickup Box.

Black was not available on Ford trucks in 1972. You can look it up. All sites are the same on this, but if you look here, you will see that black was not available in 1972 on Ford Trucks, Decoding Your 1972 Ford Truck VIN - FORDification.com . I have three different original 1972 Ford Truck brochures that I've purchased with color codes. Black isn't there for 1972. I know it's hard to believe as it was in 1971 and 1973 and every other year I believe, but not in 1972. I already have the Marti report on the truck. Correct, the color code on the data plate is blank, and yes it has a special order DSO. Originally purchased at Hover Motors in Denver, CO. Bummer that Marti only has the breakdown of the total number of Rangers with the same trim codes. There were 322 total rangers with the same trim codes in 1972. This however includes all custom paint, and interior codes no matter if the truck was 4x4, 4x2, all engines etc. So the number of Black 4x2, shortbed rangers with 390 automatics, is not known for sure. Should be a pretty small number however. Ford has no record of the exact color break down of the custom color ordered trucks any further.

I'm loving the truck. Every time I take it out, people ask if it's for sale.
