1961F100 Turn Signal Help

Hopefully you guys can help because I am stuck.....

What would prevent my turn signal lever from staying engaged? In order for the turn signals to stay on, I have to hold the lever down. But when I let go of the lever, the turn signal turns off/stops.

I recently replaced the lever, switch, and plate.

*just realized I made a typo on post subject. Truck is a 1962, not 1961. Sorry.

Thanks,

Did you replace the switch with a junkyard switch or a new switch? I had the same problem but only cause I replaced mine with a junkyard switch. I bought one from Bobs F100 for 40 bucks and that solved the problem. The plastic on the switch eventually wears out and won't hold the lever in place. Let me know how it turns out.

I bought a 1965 switch from Bobs F100 for 40 bucks and that solved the problem. The plastic cancelling cam of the 1965 switch breaks, and won't hold the lever in place.
You have a 1965 F100. 1961/62 F100/250 2WD T/S switch is totally different!

1961/62 F100/250 2WD: The T/S switch (C0DZ-13341-A) does not contain the mounting plate (C0DF-13304-A). It's a separate part and was sold by itself.

The T/S handle threads into the steel mounting plate, not into the switch. Turn signals canceled by mounting plate which contains two tiny coil springs.

1960/62 Falcon/Comet & 1961/62 F100/250 2WD:

C0DZ-13341-A .. T/S Switch / Obsolete ~ 251 available NOS

C0DF-13304-A .. T/S Switch Mounting Plate / Obsolete ~ 25 available NOS

So is it possible that the springs in my mounting plate are bad?

You said you replaced the plate, was it used or new? If used, the spring(s) could be broken.

I'm sorry, I should have been more specific. The replacement plate I got was NOS.

The plate has both springs on there but I'll pull the wheel off tomorrow and make sure they aren't broke.

Any suggestions or tips incase the springs are intact and not broken? Thanks!

Do you have the proper steering column spacing? it should be 1/16" from the steering wheel.

I do. Corrected that the other day. It's right at 1/16".

I took off the wheel yesterday and the switch plate has both springs on it. I'm not sure why it's not staying engaged. I'm sure I've done something wrong...

Did you ever find out what the problem was? I am having the same issue.

Is it the switch that keeps the turn signal on?

I did read that, but it is not answering my question. I think you are talking about cancelling. The OP and I am talking about the turn signal won't lock on. Is it the switch that locks holds it on?

What do you mean by "lock on?" The T/S handle (13305) threads into the cancelling plate (13304) that activates the T/S switch (13341).

If the signals cancel, but do not work, the fault lies with the flasher, defective switch, burned out bulbs, corroded bulb sockets, faulty wiring.

The turn signals work, but they do not stay on. I have to hold the lever up or down. What causes the lever to stay up or down once you move it?

Since the lever attaches to the cancelling plate and not to the switch itself, I suspect the plate is bad. Are the two coil springs intact, or has one or both broken?

This may help

Picture 1 shows the switch plate upside down. See the "bump" on the far right hand side? It engages two "ramps" on the side of the switch - see picture 2. Sorry its not very clear but you can see them. See picture 3 for final assembly. The bump on the switch plate engages the ramps and holds the lever/plate in position - note that a tiny spring and clip holds down the switch plate so it will engage the switch post and the ramps. Most likely this is what is worn out. I bent the bump on my switch plate down to improve the engagement and it worked perfectly. Did this help or hinder?
