2006 E250 Issue with Transmission

Hey guys, looking for some assistance. I make euro cars fast for a living, however my work van E250 4.6L has decided it needed a time out on me.

Keep in mind, I know nothing of fords, let alone trucks/vans lol.

The ears on the back of transmission are cracked and the thing has barfed fluid everywhere. My questions are, Is this a common issue? Is it something that folks repair? If not what are my compatible transmission options? Meaning what other fords came with this transmission?

Pics of the issue issue for reference.

This is further out for reference, You can see the crack to the right.

Close up.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I think that is the extension housing that cracked. Is the case cracked, too? The extension housing can easily be replaced with the trans in the truck.

Well that's surprising news, that's the only place it's cracked. Any idea where I would find this piece?

You might find it at a good auto parts store, or a dealer, or Transmission Parts & Kits | Rebuilt Transmissions & More | Transtar.

Thanks, can anyone tell me what transmission code or part number this transmission is? OR what other year/make/model that this transmission would come in?

2006 e250 Van, 4.6L Automatic, 2WD.

Thanks

Never seen that before and I maintain a fleet of vans around that vintage. I'm a little surprised that it is possible to just change the back housing on the transmission without pulling it. I actually might have a junk transmission lying around and could pull that part for the right price. We tend to burn up transmissions after several hundred thousand miles and then just change them for used transmissions we get for around $900ish. They can be installed for maybe $450 at a shop, for a total bill around $1400 FYI.

Alright so I've finally had the time to pull this apart. The tail shaft housing easily came out without removing the trans. It's cracked in a few places which seems to have been caused by a vibration due to a sloppy rear universal.

Because it's cast I'd rather just put a decent one back in instead of welding this one up and having a leak somewhere that I missed.

So, Delgriffith do you happen to have a tail shaft housing you'd part with? Or does someone know where I may find one new/used?

Thanks

Jeebus,

I have the same problem with my 2007 F150. Have you found that tail shift housing? Did you take the cracked one off your van? Is it a big/difficult job? Did you have it up on a lift or did you use jack stands? I'd like to fix it my self if possible.

Thanks
Kurt

I ended up buying the housing from the dealer, wasn't that much. There are many variants which it appears that will work available on ebay and such but I didn't have the time to chance it so I just bought it from the dealer.

Nothing hard about the job, in fact my vans too large for my garage so I just did it in the parking lot. Not even on stands, just crawled under it as it's high enough. Hardest part was getting the trans support brace off as the bolts were rusty.... but everything came out simple all in all.

Thanks for responding Jeebus,

I'd like to do the job myself and the way you put it it sounds easy enough. How long did it take you? How does the drive shaft come out the back end? Is there any critical lining up of parts that has to be done? When you bought the housing from the dealer did it come with everything needed? Other then the housing are there any other parts I need, seals or gaskets? Did you have any documentation to refer to while doing the job or did you just take things apart and put them back together? How much fluid comes out when you take the old housing off?

Talking Thanks - I got it done.

Thanks for all the help.

I got the parts, I got some print outs from AllData and I replaced the output housing myself. Took me all day in my garage but I saved big bucks over letting the dealer do it.
