I think I almost stopped reading this thread when it said, white LED's don't produce red light, only white....
I think we learned in the early years of school white is the culmination of all wavelengths of color, and black being the absence of all. If you see white light, there is some sort of simulated red frequency present. LED's simulate white light with Red Green and Blue outputs. Or they use a short wavelength LEDs with a phosphor coating (notice your flash light LEDs are yellow) that coating converts the blue light to "white", this is an effect Sir Isaac Newton discovered a long time ago. The latter of these two options may give you a washout affect. If you have a multi led bulb like the former you will not have this issue.
Wow this guys a douche...
No I didn't actually almost stopped reading, just wanted to hook you in because I like science lol, and some people like me find the why interesting.

As you pointed out you get wash out if you use a white bulb to shine thru a red or yellow lens and why you want to use the same color bulb behind a colored lens.
Right now I only have green LED's in the gauge cluster without the colored lens and I like it so far in testing in the garage.
Before I add any LED's to the outside I want to get all lights working with normal bulbs, nothing worked on this truck when I got it but I have also moved the whole wiring harness from my parts truck to this one.

Same thing I did. Only thing is I am trying to find a dash bezel that is damaged but the headlight/wiper indicator is in good shape mine the paint is scraped off so you don't see the headlight and wiper logo that easily. Figured it would be easier to melt the plastic rivet off and CA glue a replacement in that's in better shape.

I did not use LED in the HVAC, headlight / wiper or radio.just the cluster.
This weekend I can check a 2nd cluster I have to see.

Photos of my conversion I done years ago. Everything is LED using T10 wedge base bulbs for the most part minus the radio which is using a micro wedge base bulb.

Going from memory I want to say I used 5 in the cluster for illumination for the gauges, 5 in the indicator lights at the top for turn, high beam, brake, and seatbelt. There is 1 in the headlight/wiper switch bezel. For the climate control I want to say there was 2 there and 1 for the ash tray. There is also 1 for the radio as well but that bulb is quite hard to find I found some online and been meaning to switch the one I used out for this other one I found that has more chips which I hope will get rid of the hot spot on one side of the radio dial.

No they are the standard blue. The Ice blue is a even lighter blue color which I didnt want. Many people have commented when I did mine that the blue is very spot on to how these trucks looked color wise when new.
