I agree with everyone else on keeping the Merc frame and body, but that Cummins with trans is very heavy (+1000#). The frame will have to be reinforced considerably. It will be a real stump puller but it will have lots of handling issues. AX won't have to worry about any autocross competition.

A person would have to check into this but a mechanic/Cummins fanatic friend of mine says the early Cummins ways far less (150 lbs more than a 440) than a late one and if a auto is used (727 with an od) shouldn't be that heavy.The cast iron 5sp is heavy.The newer style is a couple hundred heavier than the gen one Cummins.

I was sure that was correct as I was in Jeep and Truck Engineering (JTE) at that time and we couldn't put the engine in late 1980 4WD trucks due to the weight on the front axle.
