I know this isn't in the US like most of you, but still I thought it painted a picture that is most likely pretty close to anywhere that they do emission testing.

B.C.

Basically, they found emission testing to be a giant waste of money.
Who ever seen that coming?

It might be a big waste of money, but it makes money for local mechanics. I bet if Bernalillo County (where I live in NM) decided to abandon it, mechanics would fight it. The machines are relatively cheap ($3k or so) and probably pay for themselves in a year. And an emissions test doesn't involve much time or effort.

I was actually surprised at how perfunctory the test for my 6.0 was. Just a quick look at the tailpipe to check for visible smoke, plug into the OBDII to check for any codes, an under-hood inspection (not sure what he was looking for there -- he was looking on the passenger side of the engine), and then a vacuum test of the fuel cap.

I personally think it's silly to require that a diesel fuel cap is vapor tight. The vapor pressure of diesel fuel isn't great enough to do much of anything.

The gov't "makes" money for farmers too, with biofuels like ethanol from corn, and biodiesel. Both of which are not feasible, but they just keep pouring tax dollars into.

My opinion is that it is not progressive to steal a little from many, to make money for a few. Green energy, clean air, etc are all just words they use to hide behind and pull wool over your eyes.

Easy there. I didn't say I agreed with the economic theory behind it. I just said that's how the mechanics are going to see things...

I look at it this way;
Paying for an air test means money wasted that might get spent on something else, maybe right at that very garage.

I'd rather pay a guy to put in a lift kit, than track problems down like how tight my fuel cap is, to keep diesel fumes in ?

Does it sound like I'm disagreeing with you? I'm not.
