Power Chip or Not

I see on this forum and others mentions of adding a new chip to improve mileage and horsepower. I have and F350 with the 6.8-V-10 and would like thoughts about installing one of the chips. Do they really make a difference and what about stories I've heard about them messing up you factory computer? Any input appreciated.

Welcome to the site! I moved your post to the V10 forum, where hopefully you can get a better answer to your question.

Welcome to the forum! Your question would be best answered on the 6.8 V10 forum. This is a diesel section and although you may get some answers, the V10 guys with the most experience hang in their own forum.

No doubt you can gain alot of power with a programmer. You don't say what year is your 6.8, whether it is a 2V or 3V, will make a big difference in how you can gain power. Please tell us what year and what tranny you have.

MY Truck

My Truck is 2003 and I'm not sure which Transmission it has. How do I determine trans? I recently inherited this truck and so far I'm very impressed with it. That engine is amazing except for the mileage part. Any and all suggestions welcome.

Before you chip or program, you need to gut your exhaust including an upgraded "Y" pipe. After that chore, then you should purchase a Transgo Tugger Shift Kit and have the tranny pan dropped for a service and add the Transgo. You have a 4R100 tranny. After that, then consider a Mike's 5 Star programmer for a 2 V 6.8. Talk to Mike about what you want in the way of performance, economy or towing and he will fix you up.

Thanks Pappy19 for the info. Haven't decided which direction I'll go yet, but this info helps sort out various options.
