f600 engine swap help needed
I am thinking about swaping my 254 flat head six for somethin with a little more power. I have a 1953 F600 with a T98 (i believe) 4 speed transmission, and a 6.20 ratio rear axle. I also am running a divorced mounted gear vendor overdrive so highway cruising is now a pleasure. Does anybody have any information on engine bolt patterns and what other motors will match this bell housing? I thinking of a Y-block or perhaps a 352 or 390. I have done swaps in Jeeps and um, GM trucks but not that familiar with this Ford 6. I can make front mounts if need be. The truck has an outstanding transmission and I would like to keep it.
I might keep the 6 if anyone has a source for two carb manifolds and dual/split exhaust manifolds for this motor. This motor has very low miles as the cab and chassis is a retired fire truck.
Thanks alot in advance.

Well you can forget the 6 cly bellhousing thats just for a six. Y blocks have
to stick with Y block bellhousings. Going with a FE or FT is what I'd do.
Lots of 1970's 360s and so on in junkyards for a four speed. Problem is you
need FT exhaust manifolds that dump in the middle cause car manifolds
maybe tight with the steering box. For me its the FTs- same motor mounts
same Napa exhaust pipes bolt for bolt. Its a natural for 1953 - 1956. All
mine have 391's quiet, smooth as a watch. No drilling or welding or cutting.

Welcome to FTE.
A Y block will be the simplest swap, allowing you to keep your current trans. An FE will not bolt up to your T98, so a trans swap would be needed, along with new mounts and driveshaft.
I also have a '53 F600, and did the Y block swap, blew it up, then did the FE/trans swap. Lots of power now.
Where are you located? I might be interested in the 254 if you want to part with it...

Yeah. You would need a Y-block Bell.
I removed my 239 Y-block & (synchro) T-98 (with associated E-brake) to install a 292 + E4OD trans.
So I too have a complete T-98 with Y-block Bell housing that came out of my 55 F-600.......... (Actually I have 2 bell-housings)
If you're in the NW, (Western Wa) we can talk. The T-98 is probably one of the best, still supported , 4 speed medium duty transmissions ever made..........If I wasn't using the E4OD, I would just put my T-98 back in!
The Jeepsters LOVE them!
Welcome aboard!!

I am in south Alabama near Florida line. Thanks for all the help. I thought the bell bolt pattern would be different. I think I know where a 292/312 in a 53 f600 with four speed is located. I will double check motor and trans. I really like the looks of a Y-block, there is lots of new/old speed equipment available to dress them up. Again thanks to all. I now know what to look for and what to get when I find it. I will have to keep the 254 until I find all the parts for the swap. When I am ready to turn loose, I will use this site to find it a good home.

Also, many people will claim a "Y" to be a 312 when it's really a 272/292.
Go to Mummerts page: TECHNICAL and HOME PAGE for identification info.
