Interesting....

Either way it looks like my HPOP failed before, and probably failed again. Is there anything I can do so this doesn't happen again?!?! Do I need to spend $7-800 on a fancy aftermarket pump?

The only differences between the early 04 and late 04 is the use of the wavy oil rail, the relocation of the ICP, different style branch tube and the HPOP had its output increased but is still the same swashplate style pump. I have heard good things about the diesel site pump and while more expensive is worth it to me just due to the reliability. Here is a link to diesel site, http://www.dieselsite.com/2003-20046...lpumphpop.aspx Their web site even shows 2003-2004.5 perhaps you could ask them why it doesn't just say 03-04?

Those billet pumps sure look nice, but $1300 plus core....ouch...

If I get something like that can I say it's as reliable as the 05+ pump? The warranty doesn't mean anything to me with all the labor involved.

I'm starting to wonder if a 200,000 mile engine is worth putting this kind of money into. I could probably find a 05+ running engine for 2 or 3 grand. And then sell what's left of what I have.

What about retrofitting an 05+ style pump into my engine? My mechanic says it's possible, but a ton of work. But the pump is a whole lot cheaper....

The pump you would need would be the $999.00 model, the $1300 model is more if you have larger injectors and heavy mods. The bad thing about the OEM reman for those years is they are a crap shoot, guys have been known to get them bad straight out of the box. You could retrofit to the 05' pump, you would at a bare minimum need to remove the transmission and rear cover to access the branch tube and since the heads and rear cover will be off, it would be a good time to install new lifters and stud it.

I just got off the phone with my mechanic. Apparently all the bulletproofing work I paid extra for, and the EGR delete, hasn't been done. He says it's completely factory.

He's waiting for my OK on HPOP replacement, but now I may just put a cheap one in there and get rid of this truck. The dealer I bought it from is getting sued.

I've got two OEM pumps directly from Ford for my customers that were bad right out of the box in the past 6 months and I just put an engine in a truck that I bought to resell and that pump quit after about 150 miles.

Still struggling with a Ford pump or the billet pump. If I get a brand new Ford pump does it come with any warranty? The labor to install my pump is going to be about $300. If the Ford pump is $400 cheaper than the billet, it could still fail once and I'd be ahead....

You will want to confirm this with the ford parts guy but I believe it has a 2 year warranty as does the dieselsite pump.

Well, I'm finally told my truck is ready to go pick up. The mechanic says my old HPOP was definitely the original, has a date stamp of 04. That means the dealer that sold it lied when they said they had replaced it before - but it also means the factory pump lasted nearly 200,000 miles....

Thank you for the update and glad to hear she's running again.

All pumps from Ford are remans. Date/casting stamps do not mean anything.
