2013 f150 5.0 blue smoke and rattle on cold start
Hey guys,
Im new here but i have a 2013 f150 with the 5.0. It has has a tap since new but hasnt gotten any worse and the dealer said it was normal. Recently it was about 5 below Fahrenheit and the truck hadnt been running in 3 days. I started it and it instantly started banging with a healthy puff of blue smoke. Any ideas? Has 8000 kms since last oil change at the dealer. Has 102k kms on it so just out of warranty.
Thanks everyone,
Brad

This is the second time it has done it like this. Most days it starts fine with no smoke at all. To me its like a valve lifter is stuck or something. It was rattling pretty good. I have remote start and it was loud enough i heard it from inside the house, looked outside and there was a nice puff of blue. My 2011 had the excess oil consumption problem which this truck does not suffer from. Weird

Blue smoke on startup is usually the valve guide seals beginning to wear out. I haven't heard of the modern Ford V8 engines being prone to this though. Using a 0W20 oil will help reduce wear upon startup, but if you've already got oil getting past piston rings or valve guide seals, that grade of oil may exacerbate those issues.

Hi Brad,
That engine shouldn't be banging or having blue exhaust smoke. Send me a PM with your VIN, full name, phone number, and servicing dealer info. I'll see what resources are available to help,
Mathieu
