Low fluid or excessive wear, or old fluid.
It has a delayed engagement because the fluid can't fill up the servo either because it is leaking, or the fluid is too low. So it sits there and slips, which superheats the fluid. The superheated fluid expands until it takes up enough space that it can fill the servo.
You need to fix that ASAP, slipping will kill the trans fast. You are probably way overdue for a fluid change as well.
