223 I-6 Oil Filter Cartridge Woes

Well what I thought was going to be a painless oil change like the previous ones I have done has turned into a frustration with the stock oil filter cartridge on my 55 F100 223 I-6...I can't get it to stop leaking! It's never done this before so I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. Maybe the replacement gaskets that are provided with the filter don't fit good and tight. I even went back to the one I removed and still no improvement. I think it may be time to convert to a spin-on conversion. I've read good reviews on them. In the meantime if anyone can offer any tips to the carttridge problem I would sure appreciate it. Thanks. Steve

Where is it leaking, at the rim or the center bolt? Are you sure there aren't two gaskets stuck in the lid?

On the bottom rim. No double gasket-just one against block. Every other time I have done this, no problems. I'm a bit stumped here. Thanks.

I got tired of dealing with that on my 55 as well. I went to NAPA and got the spin on conversion.

I think I will pay NAPA a visit. I checked their website but couldn't locate it; anyone recall the P/N?

No problem. I "think" P/N FIL 4124 is the one but will confirm with Napa tommorow.

Just make sure you install in with the word "top" on top or it will drain out.

Update...the leak stopped.

Good news, I was able to resolve the leak. It kept troubling me thinking why all of a sudden the cannister was acting up so I retraced all my steps and came to the conclusion that when I switched out the O-Ring gasket at the block, I installed it dry vice coating it in oil. So after doing that, the leak stopped around the base but there was still a slow drip coming from the bottom of the cannister bolt. A little more tightening and she is back to normal. I kind of feel a bit embarrased but will look at it as another learning experience and what not to do next time I swap-out filters. I still ordered a conversion kit from Napa and will most likely go that route in the near future. Thanks for everyone's help and advice. Steve

There are two gaskets, 6749 between the bolt head and canister and 6838 .. between the filter and the mounting plate, both originally came with the cartridge oil filter.

If the large gasket is cork, it shrinks with age. So before installing it, it needs to be soaked in hot water for about 10 minutes.
