I need to get a tonneau for my truck, it has factory bed caps, which I would prefer to keep if possible. I want either a soft roll up or retractable hard cover. Any recommendations or ones to steer clear of?

 

Just put a Roll and Lock on my F350 PSD and like it. Had to special order since have a tool box on it also.

One of the first things I bought for my truck was an Extang Tuff Tonneau. I bought mostly to keep snow and debris out of the bed...I had it for 9 years. No problems with it at all.

I just bought the BakFlip G2 with Bak Box. Pricey but I like it. Quality seems good, bed was dry after a trip through a car wash and it flips well out of the way when max space is needed.

I think it will also look a little more inaccessible than the vinyl toppers to those with larcenous intentions.

my experience tells me to stay away from a manual roll up as they are cumbersome to work with and the one that came on my new 350 requires me to carry a 2 step ladder or climb into the bed

I had a trifold tonnopro that I kept from my previous truck and my put it back on the 350 --- it was great and easy to fold and unfold with the 5er

 

I put a Truxedo Truxport on my 2008 F350 8ft. I liked it so much, I put one on my 2013.

In my case I needed a soft cover as my generator rides behind the cab and sits above the bed rails. The cover rolls past the generator, so I don't have to move it to run the generator. The cover stretches over the generator, has built in bars that roll/unroll with the top, can be easily opened and closed by one person on the ground, and shuts tight (I like the Velcro on the sides).

 

I've had really good experiences with Access soft covers. I always bought their best model, but suspect even their low end cover would be a good quality piece.

 

I don't know about the "Bak-Box", but I purchased a Bak-Flip G2 for my sons 1/2 ton ram a few years ago, it's tough, (he's always standing on it to clean his cab), it sits flush, easy to install yourself, when folded and stowed takes minimal space in his bed,and has never leaked.

Mine is a Ford accessory, but I think it is the BakFlip without the name. I like it as it keeps things dry, easy to fold up, and seems more secure than the soft covers. Looks just like what RigTrash601 showed.

 

That's probably what you have, the Bak-Flip cost $650.00 on Ebay, free shipping. If anything can outlast my son, it's gotta be tough.....

 

If you just want a simple roll up tonneau, you can't beat the Extang line. This is the 4th truck that I've had one on and so far they have worked well. When pulling the 5er, it rolls up out of the way, the cross pieces go in the trailer storage area and the cover reassembled for reasonable bed content security if we are staying somewhere for several days. The only drawback is that most roll ups are stiff and hard to resnap when it's cold though there is one Extang model that 'cranks' down. For my use the tri-fold and single piece bed cover are a poor choice as they would have to be completely removed to pull the camper though do have to say that they look nice.

 

Thanks for the input guys, I'd ideally like a Pace Edwards Jack Rabbit but it may be out of my price range by the time it is shipped here to the UK, do any of you know if any of these will work with the factory bed caps?

 

The Bak-Flip works with them, don't know if you want that type of cover though. You live in the UK and drive that beast? Must look like a monster in that environment!

 

I already have a Bak Roll-X on its way to me for my new F250. My only concern is if my fifth wheel hitch will sit too tall in the bed and prevent the cover from closing.

 

I've never dealt with the Bak-Roll, is it a soft roll up type? Like I said earleir, the one that I had purchased my son is durable to say the least. I usually find some "issue" with everything, but so far, it's been money well spent, have no complaints. IDK about the model you mentioned though.
