New Guy, New Truck... New Problems

Hey there my names mike. I recently sold my jeep and bought a 1996 f250 7.3 powerstroke with the E40D tranny. Supposedly tranny was rebuilt 20k ago. It runs and drives great, has about 250,000 miles. It has dual 5" stacks, k&n intake, and a ts 6 position chip. However it also has some issues that i really would like to adress. I am going to have this truck for a very long time, i have done research and i know the tranny is the weak link. what the truck needs is:
Shut off Solenoid, lift pump, fuel filter housing pisses fluid and the lines and pressure switch are rotted as well as that sensor located on it, power steering pump/lines, gas tanks rotted/leaking, Oil pan was previously apoxied, a left front cab mount, and drag link of pitman arm.
Basically, i do plan on upgrading this truck, but i paid more for it then i should have already, so i want to be smart and do the right thing once.
I have read about fuel bowl delete/ electronic fuel/ t500HPOP/ mods, i am just curious if this will solve my leaking issues. So im here asking the experts what they would do if they were in my shoes, im also a 21 year old college student, so order of importance is key too.
Thanks everyone!

nothing beats a good electric fuel system to get rid of the stock mechanical pump.
Solves tons of leaking problems and puts better filters in the system.

As for a shutoff solenoid, not sure on that one.

That's because there isn't one.

Ditch the K&N; not enough air, too much dust. Look up "6637"; it will probably clamp right onto your K&N plumbing.

Steering - if that center/drag link is ready, the others are probably done as well. Unless it's been done piecemeal previously. When I did our RCLB, I built the whole thing on the ground, all four pieces and new sleeves, based on measurements of the existing linkage. Then I just dropped the old stuff at once as an assembly and installed the new one. This gave me the option of backing out, reinstalling the old stuff if needed, without affecting the alignment. Also got a real close approximation of the alignment; my alignment guy barely had to tweak it. The Moog parts at Summit seemed to hit the best quality/price point.

If the epoxy is holding the oil pan, leave it alone. You have to pull the motor to replace the pan.

if your looking at doing injectors, fuel bowl delete, HPOP ect, and its leaking this is the order i would follow.

Electric fuel pump kit (irate diesel performance has a complete kit 1000$), T500 or Honey Badger Jr HPOP, then injectors (rosewood diesel performance)

the reason for doing this order is to get the larger amount of fuel up to the injectors quicker which is what the electric fuel pump kit does, then the new HPOP delivers more oil to the injectors to better actuate them, and then the larger injectors are last because now you will have the fuel and oil to run them well.

Thanks for the responses. I will ditch the K&N next weekend. This weekend i changed all fluids, did transmission lines, fixed the window, and installed a new radio. Gotta save up a little for the electric fuel system but that will definitely be my first step in building this truck into a sweet ride.

^^ Agreed, if you can get that setup for less than $3k I think you're doing pretty well unless it's really old. Some people but 25k miles on in a year, other it might take 5 years, but either way that should really wake the old girl up! It will make that stock transmission hate you though...

By the way, welcome to the site! I think you will like it here.

Well thanks! Yeah the price is about half of 3k. But it has no wiring or hoses. Has high pressure lines though.

I have almost the same truck as you and the TransGo Tugger kit was one of the biggest improvements for me. If you know a tranny guy, I highly recommend doing it. The shifts are clean and the tranny feels much tighter. It may not hold up to crazy power for years, but if you drive it reasonably I think you might find it is a pretty good tranny. The designer is on this forum too and I am sure it was built to handle a fair amount of power and stress. The kit cost me a bout $400 with a full fluid change, filter and a $100 to my friend for doing all the technical stuff. Lot cheaper than a BTS tranny.

I think its a really good deal. even though ill have to buy a bunch of hoses and fittings as i go. i think im going to go for it. and thanks for the heads up on the tugger kit, i will definitely be looking into that. my goal is around 400 hp. Hopefully it will hold up with the tugger!
