Desmogging the 370
I tried this in the engine forum with no results
Hello
I am continuing to desmog my 370 in one of my low mileage 1979 f600s. I realize this is a low performance engine and will never make any mileage. I would like to maximaze its ability.
I would appreciate any ideas or opinions
I have removed the smog pump and associated hardware and lines
I am replacing the governed cab with a 600 cfm. I will put a riser on it to get rid of the egr (egrs dont help or hurt as far as I know but it will clean up the top of the motor.)
I am looking at ignition tweaks..
a) replace dist with one of the hei 460 ones
b) converting my fomoco
I already have all the common sense items.. good wires etc
Replacing the air cleaner with a less restrictive one while still looking for excellent filtration
There is a smog tube coming off the back of each head.. it appears to bolt in place.. I was thinking of removing these and fabricating a plate to fit in place of them..
I already have a big exhaust
I appreciate any help
Thank you

You've covered most of it. The air injection tube connections might be threaded and you may be able to plug them with a bolt (5/16" iirc, which isn't likely). As for EGR, you never know till you pull it if you will have any noticable difference, like pinging for example.
No governor? Hope you are the only one driving it.
Nothing suggested is going to free up any power to speak of.

I don't think you will gain anything by removing the emission equipment. The air pump takes very little power to turn, as it really develops almost no airflow.
Removing the egr will lead to pinging which you can possibly live with in a light car, but can cause real damage to a medium truck engine because of the loads it sees, even unloaded. The egr allows more timing advance without pinging, so you wlii have to retard to compensate, which destroys any fuel economy gains you hoped for.
My F600 has the governor disconnected, and it is too easy to over-rev the engine without it, in my opinion.
