V10 mileage chips?
I know I'm probably going to get a lot of crap for this one and probably well deserved. I've been googling around and used the search feature here. I will do my homework tomorrow and read read read posts. I just wanted to know about one thing. My F350 V10 is getting about 10 mpg and I realize this is normal. What happened over the past couple of weeks is that I was going to buy another truck manufacturer diesel that with a chip and some mods got 20 mpg. I almost went through with it but I opted out because I love my Ford. I just want to know is there anything I can do? Upgrades, chips, cold air intake, straight pipes or whatever I need to do to get this truck up to 20 mpg or is it hopeless? I need it for work and at 6'3" 280lbs this little commuter honda is not working for me. It seems the consensus on the internet so far is that I didn't buy it to be economical so tough luck. Appreciate any advice.

When ever you get the urge to sell your V-10 and go for a "more economical" diesel, remember that the fuel and maintenance costs on a diesel rig are enormous compared to your V-10. The V-10 will never ever be made into 14-15 mpg average since it is made to haul and tow. But, it's still the most reliable engine made in the past 20 years for 3/4 ton + trucks and motor homes. The best you can do is get Mike at Mike's 5 Star tuning to make you a flat out economy tune, do an intake replacement like AFE and exhaust (you don't say if yours is a 2V or 3V engine) improvements. Then don't drive over 50 and use only non-ethanol gasoline. Oh yeah, change the plugs every 50k and fuel filter every 10-15k.

Ok, sorry I've been absent. Thank you for the replies. 3/4 of my driving is done in town and I figured 10 mpg. I don't know the gearing, I read the sticker inside the door frame a couple of days ago and I can't remember the numbers off the top of my head but it lead me to believe that it was 4.10 off of a list I found. But then I saw a post that said 2007 F350 Super Duty V10's don't come with a 4.10. The truck I was going to buy had so many factory issues, I don't know if I can say that name here but it's a very popular brand. Well, the only issue I have with my Ford now is some idiot (me) decided he could fit into an atm slot in the bank with a crew cab. That'll cost. This V10 is a bad-*** and I guess it's here to stay. I'm an electrician apprentice so the wife said when I hit journeyman I can drive it all I want. lol. Thanks again guys!

The only bit of information I've read about the V10 is spark plugs blowing out? I hear it's an easy fix. Does this even relate to the 2007 models? I've been reading more and more about these V10's and the information I'm getting is that they are one tough engine. The only hauling we do is pulling a 3 horse slant but I was hoping to get a fifth wheel at some point. With the weight of the trailer and almost 3,000 lbs of horses you don't even notice they're back there even on steep grades.

Well thanks a ton guys. I guess I just didn't know what I was sitting on. I bought it because it was a Triton V10 and I started getting a lot of flac from my neighbor with the big Powersroke. Then I went on and about traded it for a Dodge Cummins 5.9L. I don't have pockets deep enough to fix all those problems. So some body work on the left side bed and I have a really nice truck. Still forgot to check the sticker to see if it was a 4.10. I'm going to put some pictures up tomorrow. You've made me a fan.

A V10 and gas mileage, especially with the ethanol laced crap being sold these days is an oxymoron. Mine went from about 11mpg with 'pure' gas to 9.4 with 10% ethanol for local driving. Open road went from over 13.4 to 12.5 with the 10% ethanol. Pulling the 12K 5er - - went from 9 to 7.4. There is one positive with that crap - a wee bit higher performance. I now have a diesel - and do get way better fuel mileage but at the cost of higher prices ($.50 or more/gallon) for that fuel, hundred dollar oil changes instead of $30 and worries about draining the fuel filter, keeping the DEF tank filled with $6-8 buck a gallon stuff just to name a few drawbacks. Now do I like the diesel - it sure pulls that camper a lot easier, but after a long cross country camping trip this summer it may get traded for a 6.2 if we have any $$ left.
