At the time, no one could figure out what was wrong with it because it didn't do it all the time. After it caught on fire I called ford and they denied there was any kind of problem, wasn't their fault, I must have done something wrong, etc. A couple of years later they sent me a letter saying it was a faulty design, needed dielectric grease applied regularly or it would catch on fire and reimbursed me for roughly what the paint cost me to fix it but not enough to cover the rubber/plastic stuff under the hood that it melted.
