How do you measure front spring sag?
I have a 2001 Std. Cab F250 4x4 with a 7.3 PSD. It has 285/75R16 tires. I just replaced the shocks and noticed that the driver's side is about 1/2" lower than the passenger side. This was determined by measuring between the shock mounting points. Driver's side measured 17-5/8" and the passenger side was right at 18".
There is only about 2-1/2" between the rubber bumper and the pad on top of the spring on the driver's side. I think that explains why I bottom the front suspension when I go over a certain railroad crossing near here.
My door sticker is gone, but I got the build sheet and my truck has a 4,700 lb. front axle and a "standard" suspension package. I assume that this means 4,800 lb. spring packs, which would be code "U" on the door sticker.
Does anyone know where I need to measure to determine how much my springs have sagged and what that dimension should be with new springs? I don't have any problems with tire or ground clearance, and don't want to raise the front end any more than the minimum to get the spring travel back into specifications.
I have some wear on the inside of both front tires, with the driver's side being much worse and showing some cupping. I can't detect any movement in the ball joints, and wonder if sagging springs could be part of the cause?
Thanks in advance,
Jock
