Need a little help

I just finished the wiring harness, everything works as it should, but I learned two things. First thing, the EZ wire harness is not EASY! but it works great. Next thing, the hood is very hard and I have knots and cuts to prove it. Is there any way to get it to raise higher? I also need to know where to get new sending units for both the oil pressure and water temp.

It really helps us (and therefore you) if you put your truck's year and model in your Signature, which you do in the UserCP (control panel).

The BonusBuilt trucks (48-52) are not particularly generous in underhood access. But you can disconnect the support springs at the the hood connection, and raise it a little further, but you need to securely tie it up to the rafters or something. It's also really not that hard to remove the hood, which makes a huge difference. Leave the hinges in place if you do that.

At the service station we always kept a broomstick handy. For major work, the first thing to come off was the hood.

Sorry about leaving out what I'm working on. It's a 1950 F1.

Forgot to say, as far as the hood being hard, check all the hinge points. Spray them liberally with Kroil or other penetrating oil for a couple days, then go to a regular oil like 3-in-1 or similar light motor oil. If that doesn't help, you may have to take the hood off and work on the hinges and spring support. Make sure none of the hinge parts are bent.

Are there any after market oil pressure sending units and water temperature senders that will work on the original gauges?

I do not know but you can use the original sending units with 12v+ but it is a good idea to install dropping resisters (should improve sender lifetime). I ran Willard, my 49 for years that way running a 55 Buick nailhead and will run Willard the same way with a stroked 350 sbc.

When I got the truck the PO had already changed it over to 12 volt. The 6 volt wiring was burnt to a crisp, I'm surprised it didn't burn the truck. I installed a voltage reducer on the gauge panel with the new wiring harness. All the gauges will work if you ground the wire going to the sender. Direct reading gauges show 40 psi oil pressure and 140 degrees water temp. Could you tell which vendors would have the sending units that fit my old truck?

Are you asking where to buy original Ford 1950 sending units, oil pressure, temperature and fuel level, that you can run at 12 v?
To my knowledge you will need to find used senders for oil pressure and fuel level. Dennis Carpenter sells new 6v temperature senders.

Hey Sunny,
Welcome Aboard! Nice to see another '50 on here.
One thing to note if you have the same temp. sending unit we had - that's not a wire that's hooked up to the temp. sending unit - It's a real small tube full of Mercury or some other nasty stuff. Handle with care.

Good luck over there.
