Turn signal Switch

My turn signals haven't been working for awhile, I was told that it was the turn signal switch. I have no idea how to replace one. Can anyone tell me how?

Have you checked your fuses and turn signal flasher ? Do your 4 way flashers work? Check these first before replacing turn signal switch

As mentioned, T/S switch failures usually cause other lights to also have issues. The 4 ways and brake lights are both integrated in the T/S switch.
The signals and 4 ways have separate fuses and flasher units. If one of these work, but not the other, it's usually due to a fuse or flasher rather than the switch.

However, if the switch does need replaced, it requires removing the steering wheel, and partial column disassemby to perform this task.

Well I've been told a few times that my brake lights weren't working, but when I check them, they work.

It requires entire steering column disassembly. This takes hours and lots of patience. Pray that it isn't. There is a plug on the end of the TS switch that wont come out w/o taking it all the way down.

IMHO this is pretty easy - remove the steering wheel, the column shroud, turn signal switch lever, disassemble the connector end and remove the wires from the gray plastic, unscrew the old switch, pull it out; installation is the reverse of removal.

This is LOTS easier than total column disassembly.

How do you get the big plastic plug on the end to come through the column? James and I just did this Sunday. We tried to do it the short way, but there wasn't enough room to get it come through the column.

Mine is an 87 and the columns are a little different. That might be the issue. Then again it might not.

Take the wires out of the plug. Done it numerous times myself. First time was over 30 years ago........

Yes, remove the wires from the plug... pull out the red retainer, then use a dental pick or small screwdriver to push back each tab that's holding each wire's connector in the plastic housing. Brand-new switches from Ford come with that connector already disassembled...

Yeah, the newer (comparatively) models are a bit easier than the 60's/70's models. Especially when the new ones come already disassembled.
Using a long-ish piece of baling/mechanics wire, and staggering the ends of the wires, with tape over the ends before pulling them out, gives an easier way to feed the new wires back down.

draw a picture or diagram of your wire harness plug showing all the wire colors and where they go before pulling wires out of plug this will make your job of replacing your turn signal switch So Much Easier.
