F-250 Drive shaft E Brake

Has anyone had any luck finding replacement parts or a rebuilder for ebrake linings and components of a drive shaft mounted ebrake? NAPA has no replacement parts available.

Jolly Roger Joe has just recently done this and so have I. (Joe's was an F4 though)

Here is my post on where I got the lining:

Earl's world has some good info too.

If you notice reading through my thread. Rivet size is an issue. You might have to adapt some. If you need any of the smaller ones that I bought, I can send them to you. McMaster Carr only sells in packs of 100 so I have plenty of those. The ones I dug out of my uncles stock pile, I'm going to hold on to for a while, but I could send a couple for reference if needed.

Someone mentioned the model T band is the same width as the 250s . They used epoxy to mate the band to the material . I took mine to a truck repair shop and they sent it out, $150 later I got mine back with it epoxied together could have done it myself for about $50 . Just look up Model T brake band .

My build thread has the process I used in post # 1022. I got the lining material and rivets from McMaster-Carr for under $50 shipped.

Here's the McMaster-Carr lining I used

Thanks Joe, I will let you know on the rivets. I did a search on ebay and found all kinds of hits on brak lining. My steel ring is ok. Im thinking about going the epoxy route. If all the e brake is used for is for after stopped, I would think epoxy would be fine. Nice build thread you have, awesome project! Im put a dual axel under my 250 and Im building a flatbed. Thanks for sharing so much information on your build thread.

DR Smith, are you talking just the lining or the whole assembley?

Good idea Dave,

Do you know if they used epoxy or rivets?

Parts catalog pic: D = F250 (1948/52 F2/F3 & 1953/56 F250/350 is the same).

List the numbers of the parts you need, I'll see if anyone has them NOS

I redid mine about 6 months ago, I bought I think 2 feet of 2" wide brake lining from mcmaster and used epoxy and pop rivets to hold it in place.

I clamped the material in place and drilled little holes all the way around using the steel band as a pattern. Then I went from the inside to countersink the holes for the rivet head.

Next I coated both with two part epoxy, quickly installed the rivets and ran out to clamp it to the rear of the transmission overnight so the epoxy would cure under pressure and in place. works great and have not had any problems with it!

Outlaw, just to let you know I spent two years looking for a brake band with linings before I found one. When I was gathering parts for my project I was checking Craigslist, E-Bay, this FTE classifieds and the HAMB for the hard-to-find parts such as this. I was checking almost every day.
When I saw someone on E-Bay selling a brake band I jumped on it so fast I nearly broke my keyboard. That was about 3 years ago and I have not seen one since. I have seen some worn-out & rusted bands that need to be re-lined, those show up about every several months or so. (ones that I know about anyway) I still check almost daily for some other parts but if i see another I'd be surprised.
So if Bill cannot locate one after you give him the part number - I'd recommend sending your old one out to a highly experienced brake lining specialist who can restore yours. Expect to pay a lot for it to get done, but the reality is they are tough to find new ones. Because these parking brakes are so necessary for our trucks, treat them as any item that would cost $200 or more to have a properly safe ride. If Bill can't locate one, then you are limited to rummaging through a giant swap meet somewhere and hoping someone has one and doesn't know what it fits.
NOS ones are probably as rare as elbows on a snake.

Tom

Mine is a 55 F250 and I too and I will be ditching the T98 and transmission mounted parking brake.

I installed a 72 dana 60 in the rear and will switching over to using the parking brake cables when I install the NV4500 5 speed onto the Y block. I want to keep the brake lever on the floor though, cause its sweet!

If you think about it the only reason for the rivets is to hold the brake material from falling out! When it clamps down on the drum the only thing stopping it from turning is friction between the two. So that same friction is also working between the outer band and the friction material the rivets and epoxy do not need to take any load. I can try to post pictures later if you would like to see what I did.
