Exhaust manifold gaskets.

Well, looks like im going to have to install exhaust manifold gaskets. Can I just remove all bolts except the one at each end and slide the gasket between the manifold and head? Really dont want to fight taking the manifold completely off. Haven't bought the gaskets yet and wonder if they are designed like the SB gaskets with the end bolt ears trimmed off so you dont have to completely take the manifold off.

In any case. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thx.

I completely remove the manifolds so the mating surfaces can be cleaned.

To reinstall, I have bolts with the heads cut off to use as alignment studs.

I installed manifold gaskets a couple weeks ago.
My manifold were starting to become veryyy rusty and were leaking around the block. the two studs going from the manifold to the up-pipe were almost non-existant. Solution:
Purchased a used pair of exhaust manifolds off a southern truck for cheap, cleaned them up and put about 5 coats of ultra high temp paint on them.
I cut the old up-pipe studs off with a drimil tool, let the manifold studs soak overnight with PB blaster, lucky they all came out smooth. Installed the new manifolds with the gaskets and hardwear from ford. Its such a tight space in there i ended up removing both fender wells, i think it would of been damn near impossible if i didnt. Anyways, about 12-15 hours later it all went back together smooth and running like a butte.

HERES THE BAD PART:
While trying to get the old manifold out, broke some rust scale free and a piece fell in my eye. Pulled most it out in the mirror but a piece was still stuck. Had to go to the ER. They tried a couple things but didnt really do crap. Had to go to a specialist the next day and they actually "drilled" it out.
In the end:
ER bill: 790$
eye doctor bill: 380$

maybe i should of just sent it to the shop...

Man! Sorry to hear about your eye. Good to hear you're ok and no damage was done!

Yeah, probably have to remove fender wells to make it easier. Thx for the info.

I normally wear safety glasses...but they were fogging up and on top of my head when it happened.

Good news is, those amounts i posted were numbers billed to the insurance, i only have to pay about 200$ out of pocket. My eye is fine, it was 100% the next day.

Guess my point is, if your gonna do the job, take your time, safety first, and yes, i highly recommend fender well removal, you will take me for the recommendation...

YIKES...I added them when I did the HGs...I do wish that I had coated the exhaust manifolds with something before I put it all back together...

The high temp paint has worked really well so far, i think it will hold up for a long time. But if your manifolds ever do need replacement i paid 50$ for mine off ebay and you could tell they were off a southern truck, looked basically brand new.
