hi. I take it we are talking about a 6.4 diesel?

If you put it in reverse and the motor starting studdering or the trans starting doing that?

What happens in the forward gears?

I have an 08 F350 dually, the ONLY time I ever experienced anything like you described was, with wife driving truck still rolling very slowly forward she put it in reverse and gave it gas and exactly what you described happened. I nearly crapped. It's never done it since, mainly because I wait till it's stopped before even touching the shifter. I changed my diff fluid at 70k miles and I have NEVER seen diff fluid that color or smell that bad. Wasn't a burnt smell it was like diff fluid on roids. Bad bad. I changed it to Royal Purple and changed it again at 100k and it looked awesome.

Great advice , Id check the rear diff fluid. I have had limited slips to chatter when the fluid needed changing. The LS additive breaks down over time and it lets the clutches chatter. More investigation is required. May get a friend to stand beside it while backing up to help narrow down the area of the noise.
