226H Distributor vacuum diaphragm

I want to replace the distributor vacuum diaphragm because it has been on the truck forever.....does anyone know if you can just remove the hairpin retainer clip and slide the diaphragm out of the distributor or must the entire insides of the distributor be removed?.....I ask because if it requires complete removal I will probably have a mechanic do it

Thanks

It's easy to test with a MityVac hand pump.

It is just the vacuum line, the two retaining screws, and the little clip that like to fall down in the distributor.

Before you replace it, check it. Take the vacuum line loose, manually advance the point plate against the spring tension, hold your finger over the hole where the vacuum line connects, and let go of the point plate. If the point plate moves all the way back the diaphragm is shot. If you feel a vacuum at the hole where the vacuum line connects the diaphragm is good.

It is very easy. I just took mine out and replaced it. It was totally rotted out. Just pull the small clip from the rod sticking up through the distributer base plate, remove the two mounting screws and the vacuum line and it should come right out. Getting the clip back into the new rod is a little tricky. It is very small and hard to hold on to and try to see the hole through the rod at the same time.
