Loud ticking..... Imjector or cam phaser?

Thought a read a thread a while back about this but I cannot seem to find it.

The past few weeks I have noticed a ticking coming from the driver side of the engine at the top. From the tempo of the tick I would guess injector right away.

I thought I read somewhere about the can phasers being noisy but I would think that it would be on the front of the engine near the cam unless they mount them on the back side????

This noise seems to be at the top rear of the engine. Anyone else have this.... If so did you take it to the dealer with a fix?

Truck just hit 25k today and I did an oil change..... 2012 CC F-250

Thx

I would take it to a dealer if for nothing else to have it on record.

Yeah I plan to take it to the dealer but I was curious if anyone ran into the same thing and if there was an actual "fix" or if its normal operation.

Thanks

Wondering what the outcome of the original question was after going to dealer. My 2012 6.2L has the same ticking sound - just like a GM LB7 injector tick.

Right after I posted it stopped...... I have not had a chance to go to the dealer. This morning walking out to the truck I could hear it again.

It's interment so those are hard to diagnose unless there is a TSB on it. I am trying to get it to the dealer this week.

I will post my findings.

Thanks for your reply. Actually, I have noticed it more when the temp is below 50 degrees F. Once the engine warms up it seems to quiet down, or my ears get worse!

I know this is an old thread but, I have a 2014 F250 6.2L with the same ticking noise. If the truck sits for a long period of time before a start, no noise. If I start it after sitting for a few hours, get a loud tick from the engine that last for 2-3 seconds then goes away. Sounds a lot like a noisey lifter. Dealer "cant duplicate the problem". My truck has 12,400 miles on it and I run Mobil1 5W20 with Wix filters.

I've had it a couple of times myself.
No rhyme or reason to it.
It's gonna get cold here by Thursday, I'll pay close attention then.

I drove mine around all weekend, and no noise. It's been in the low 40's here. Keep us posted on what you find out.......

Started up @ 14F.
Just a little tick for about 2 seconds.
Whined for about 1 minute.
Fuel pump? Not pleasant.
I always cold start from inside the house so
I'll be paying more attention going forward.
I have a block heater but shouldn't need it over 0F I
would think.

I don't get any kind of fuel pump whine, but intermittent ticking only on start up. Mine is loud enough you can hear it in the cab. Still sounds like a loud tappet noise from a lifter. I take some relief that I am not alone with this problem, but still would like to find out whjat it is!!

thetcking in mine did end up coming back and I swore it was a lifter........I traded it in last month on a '15 Platinum with the 6.7 the funny thing was while I was on my way to the dealer the truck stalled on me in traffic.

It supprirsed the hell out of me....I actually didn't even realize it. I was sitting at a light behind a city bus which was noisy and vibrating the truck.....as soon as I went to move forward I realized the truck was off?????? put it in park and started right back up...

I guess it knew I was going to the dealer and it was pissed at me

Sounds like you already traded it...but the ticking I'm thinking you are talking about is a solenoid that is designed to remove air from the fuel system...i cannot for the life of me remember what it is called. I asked my dealer the same thing a while back, and a pointed it out to a tech while it was in the bay, he reached in and unplugged a harness up by the firewall in the center and the tick stopped, then he plugged it back in, and the tick started again. Mystery solved. he explained that if it stays unplugged too long you'll throw a code. Ford could/should have tucked this away a little better, its loud as heck in cold weather when the radio is off...sounds like an engine issue for sure. Good luck with the 6.7...I'm on my way as well.
