Crawl under the dash on the driver's side. Look up the steering column. There are two #30 Torx bolts that hold the shift cable bracket to the shift tube. They can loosen and cause this problem.

Mark,
Would that be the same for a 98 e-150 van? Ours has started doing that the past week or two. All the gears line up perfectly and none of the other gears have problems staying engaged.

This applies to almost every Ford product. I just fixed a Ranger that was doing this.

On my E-350 it was one of the clamps on the shift tube that broke because the torx screws worked loose. New clamp new bushings tightened it all down and adjusted at trans. Now everything stays tight and lines up except park for some reason.
