99 Trans

My son purchased a E99 F-250 4X4 that the previous owner had the trans replaced, still has problems with the replacement trans and the owner threw in the towel. The fluid is full and red but the truck only has 1st and Rev, nothing else. The previous owner said the original trans did the same thing and he was told the trans was bad.

1. Are the 99-03 7.3 all the same or not? I thought they were. The replacement trans is a 2002.

2. Any ideas why it won't it won't shift?

Thanks, Kevin

I don't, but there are some here that are trans savy. Looking at your sig, do you really have a 6' lift? Those with some answers will be along soon.

Yes it is chipped. My son just told me that the torque converter is different from E99 to L99 and possibly the ECM is bad.

Does the OD light flash? It could be a wiring problem, or it could be a bad computer. The wiring is MUCH more likely than a bad computer.

What would cause the OD light to flash?

My son said the 02 torque convertor was wrong (I find that hard to believe) for the E99 (Nov 1998) and a solenoid was sticking. The OD light was not flashing. Wait to see I guess.

So my son had the trans apart and replaced the 1 & 2 friction disks, they were not burnt but had some bluing and replaced them while they were apart. He also replaced the torque convertor with a new one and a new solenoid pack. Now the OD light flashes and it still will not shift out of 2nd gear. He replaced the rear diff speed sensor because the speedo was not working (fixed) and the trans output sensor. He is going to try and pull the code(s) from the trans. Is there a part number for the trans wiring harness? I looked in Ford parts but couldn't get a pic of any of the wiring harness's.

You almost certainly can't buy a new wiring harness.

As you are learning it certainly can be expensive to try and fix one of these without reading the code. Reading the codes can save thousands in unneeded parts.

Mark, you are absolutely correct! I'm stationed in Israel now and trying to help Jr. out from afar. He found this truck (E99 7.3 F-350 200K) on Craig's list for $3500 and he has $5000 total into it now. I told him everything is a risk and you had to assume the risk when he purchased this and he is! The parts he has replaced so far needed to be replaced, but now he needs to start not throwing parts at it. He is going next week to pull the codes and go from there. I will update this post when I find out more because you never know who this could help later. Thanks, Kevin

Well purchased the AE package from Riffraff and here are the codes, P1670 and P0603. I just looked and ghost codes. My son said the Speedometer still does not work after changing the diff sensor. Any ideas?

I wish I could offer some solutions but I'm a tranny novice or whatever would be below that....that being said.....

It sounds like your son is throwing good money after bad and changing out everything under the sun without a real game plan. If it were easy the previous owner would have found it.

Tracking this stuff down usually requires some scientific approach, change one variable you have reason to suspect.......otherwise for the guys here that know trannies it will be like pissin' in moving toilet.....
