Flex plate replacement

I've called a couple shops to get quotes to have my flex plate changed. One shop said they would have to lower the engine a few inches to get the tranny out easier. From what I can see this is not needed. Anyone with experience on this know if dropping the engine is needed? Thanks.

Anyone?

I don't believe nobody has pulled a tranny out if these trucks. I'm trying to get my truck to the shop tomorrow, so any input would be appreciated. Thanks again.

They don't need to lower the engine, just tilt it back a little to get to the top bellhousing bolts. They shouldn't charge extra for that.

Even that seems unnecessary. Can't you get those top bolts with a long extension. I appreciate the replys.

Yes you can , with enough extensions , and flex joints, I'm sure you can do it , let us know how that goes , OR you could take off the crossmember , and when it naturally tilts down a little , you can take it off , I'm sorry , but why ask a question, then 2nd guess the person ? (just wondering )

Its called getting another opinion.... do you have to loosen the motor mounts? Disconnect the radiator hoses? How bout the fan shroud? Any electrical you would have to worry about? Just seems slapping a couple extensions together would be quicker.

The quicker way is not always the smartest way. Don't forget, as you add extensions and universal joints you reduce the amount of torque being transferred from the ratchet to the bolt. This will make it harder to loosen the bolt. Also, you are increasing the chances of the socket twisting and slipping off the bolt and rounding it off. Good luck getting it out then.

Well I'm stuck. My truck is supercharhed and in order to drop the engine enough, it looks like I need to remove the supercharger because it is hitting the firewall. I called the stealership and the said they would lift the cab!! I guess my question is, is the metal gasket between the supercharger and intake reusable? And if anyone has a better idea let me know! Thanks again.

I am not familiar with the super charger gasket replacement, if it was me I never reuse. I find the extra few $ gives me piece if mind.

As far as lifting the cab, that is a fairly common practice now. I have seen many trucks that need this for different repairs. The cab doesn't need to be removed, just tilted. You loosen the body mount bolts and Jack the body up enough to give you room

Good luck

Thanks danorules...I guess I just have to decide what will be less work now, lifting the cab, or removing the blower.

Have you actually gotten your head under the hood and looked at it closely?
